Grog, petrol bans boosting marijuana use
The Commonwealth's intervention measures in remote communities are fuelling the increased use of marijuana, a new study out today says.

The study published today in the Australian Journal of Rural Health shows that marijuana use in one Arnhem Land community has jumped since alcohol restrictions took effect, and as leaded petrol has been replaced by unsniffable fuel.

Researchers at Darwin's Menzies School of Health also found that marijuana often has a more immediate impact on domestic violence and neglect than alcohol, because it is smoked at home by men, women and children.

One of the study's co-authors, Richard Chenhall, says there needs to be more measures to address marijuana abuse.

"One of the most important things from our findings would be to sit down with community members and talk about marijuana issues in their community," he said.

"We know very little about what's happening out there, and I think talking to people, users, non-users in the communities is an important first step to understanding the problem and how we might respond."

some people honesly think that, thats just not right, one of my close friends dad smokes pot and i realy cant think of a more open family, they talk about anything wrong and his kids all stay inline.

Now take out the words 'the problem' and substitute in 'cannabis'. Then it can be addressed productively as an issue instead of an already pre-concieved problem.

Even though are laws are quite relaxed in Australia it seems there is more of a negative stigma in comparison to the UK or USA...

The "negative effect" is that woman do it also? How about some actual, concrete negative effects, such as violence, OD, and child neglect?
