Thing is, it was on the news. So there should be a link to this news article somewhere on the new.

Did you find that on ParanoidFantasies.com?

How did you come up with that figure? It's off by a factor of at least 4.
Thanks Much
The last thing I asked was to correct me if I was wrong on the amount.

I'd be curious about how much dough is being wasted on the war on drugs.

The latest defense I've heard from the prohibitionist side (which typically is the only side presented in the media) is that pot smokers and other druggies are the same ppl who commit real crimes like robbery. So, by locking somebody up for pot, you are taking an armed robber out of circulation. Sounds weird to me, but that's the logic. Of course, many criminals when they are arrested may have drugs on them. So, during the course of plea bargaining, the prosecutors can give up the drug charges in exchange for a guilty plea on the greater offense.

I think the conservatives have given up on extinguishing drug use, and instead think that locking people up helps reduce crime.

To my mind, it sounds like sending pot smokers to Criminal University (jail) is not such a good idea. In the joint, they will be exposed to violence and many negative stimuli which will alter their personality and behavior for quite a long time. Once they get out, their methods of coping will be more likely to encompass violence. This seems self-evident to me, and is also an argument against launching new wars just for the "fun" of it (like Iraq).

On the other hand, maybe conservatives love new wars and putting tons of people into prison because it manufactures new conservatives. You go into prison a liberal, and come out a nazi. Conservative ideology is a virus. Jail, war and violence of all kinds are ways of replicating the belief system.
