Default WORLD: GW Pharma stock goes to pot after cannabis flop

GW Pharma stock goes to pot after cannabis flop
4-9-'07 | ThisIsMoney.com

A quarter of GW Pharmaceuticals' market value was wiped out in one bloody session after clinical trials on a pioneering cannabis-based medicine drew a blank.

GW's Sativex proved no more effective in treating the pain associated with multiple sclerosis than a placebo given to half the patients, which contained no active ingredients.

It is a big setback for the company, though the mouth spray is already being used by hundreds of MS sufferers in the UK.

Boss Justin Gover stressed the failure will have no effect on other on other Sativex studies.

One is looking into whether the drug can ease muscle problems associated with MS, while another is studying its efficacy in treating cancer pain.

'The regulatory pathway (on these other studies) is completely unaffected,' Gover said.

Shares in the group, which has Britain's only licence to grow cannabis, closed down 19½p, or 28%, at 52p, valuing GW at just £86m.

I have no sympathy for GW Pharma at all. While attempting to get rich by marketing products derived from the cannabis plant, GW has been funding campaigns to keep it illegal for the rest of us to even possess one. They don't want the competition from a proven-effective, safe, and inexpensive herb.

That is pretty ridiculous, I am glad this happened - hopefully people will realize how such a designed product doesnt even work, but its absolutely illogical when the plant already works.

If they can make a drug that helps other people by using some part of MJ, what would your objection be with that?

If it works, fine, use it. But that doesn't give you any reason to make cannabis sativa illegal, or make it impossible for others to use the direct plant for medicinal purposes.

So, if they took a neutral approach to MJ, you wouldn't have a problem with their "projects", am I right?

Cool

Why, oh why can't they just legalize it instead of all this screwing around?

All this money being spent on research when we just need one thing?

Marijuana prohibition is wrong............

Yes, if it was a neutral approach I would think its fine, however people need to realize the proven medicinal benefits marijuana has already shown. Do they really need to develop drugs from an already effective plant? I am quite unsure, as I am no scientist, however I think it should be done to help legitimize cannabis sativas benefits.

They can slap a patent on a drug, not on a plant. That's why they need to reproduce it as a patentable medication, so they can make millions off it.
