| UK cannabis ruling slammed by drugs experts 5-8-'08 | Euro News Cannabis is to have its classification raised by the UK government from a class C drug -- the lowest rating -- to class B. It will bring with it a higher jail term of five years for users. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told parliament she wanted to reverse Tony Blair's 2004 downgrading because of an alarming use of a stronger strain of the drug known as 'skunk'. The decision flies in the face of a recommendation from the government's own drugs experts to leave the rating unchanged. The Advisory Council described cannabis as a "significant public health issue" but said the health risks were not as serious as those of class B substances. In a separate move, newly-elected Mayor of London Boris Johnson has unveiled plans to ban alcohol on public transport in the capital. From June 1, passengers on London underground trains and buses will be denied use of the network if they are carrying open containers of alcohol. The ban reflects concerns about the growth of binge drinking in the UK and the anti-social behaviour which often accompanies it. But the transport union says the change in the law will be unenforceable as they do not have enough staff to police the ban.

| RE: Nephrosis post Brits not trying to get more attention. Lived there for 18 years and having just returned to USA (12/07) I can tell you that USA has very extreme attitudes and harsh laws & practices regards mj. I worked in the medical field (there) and was not tested once. Most people (and law enforcement) don't care about mj because a lot of people use it. Trafficing has been the big focus there. I had a visit by the constabularly last year and had two plants growing in plain sight. Nothing was said and I know they looked right at them because they said something to the effect of: "I hope that your more exotic plants don't expand in number or we may come back for a visit." I replied: "I'm a personal user who cannot afford street prices." That was it. Oh, and my bong was on the mantle. Last edited by 2High2Fly : 05-19-2008 at 07:10 PM. |
