Drug Ring Smashed At California University

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Nearly 100 people were arrested in an undercover investigation of a massive drug ring at San Diego State University in Southern California that authorities said on Tuesday was run largely by students and was "stunning" in its size and sophistication.
A total of 96 people, 75 of them students, were taken into custody on drug-related charges at the 30,000-student campus during "Operation Sudden Fall," which began one year ago with the death of a female student from a cocaine overdose.
Police arrested 18 of the students on Tuesday morning and said raids had recovered 50 pounds (23 kg) of marijuana, 48 marijuana plants, 350 Ecstasy pills and 30 vials of hash oil, as well as cocaine, psychedelic mushrooms, methamphetamine and illicit prescription drugs.
Also seized in the operation, spearheaded by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and local authorities, were a shotgun, three semi-automatic pistols, brass knuckles and $60,000 in cash.
"The stunning thing is that it was on the college campus itself and really catering to the campus crowd," DEA spokesman Garrison Courtney said. "To actually have people in college this sophisticated and operating on this level is really unusual. I would call it a light cartel without the violence."
Prosecutors said one of the students accused of dealing cocaine was one month away from being awarded a master's degree in homeland security and worked as a community service officer for the campus police department.
Another student, a criminal justice major, was arrested for possessing 500 grams (18 ounces) of cocaine and two guns.

It's not that unusual. Aren't our colleges the home of our best and brightest? I would call it an intramural experiment in free-market economics. But that's just me.

this was crazy when I first heard about it. I can't believe these kids would risk their futures just to make a buck in college...i'm all about weed but my rule has always been don't be an idiot about it and get in trouble...these guys had guns? cocaine? prescription drugs? that's nuts man. these guys are dumb.

What...*@ Blizted* don't be calling them stupid when the economy is failing us slowly and minimum wage isn't cutting it nowadays.... i did same thing for a fall quarter while i was in college... i was selling green just to make bucks....

I have no problem with people dealing. However, I hate the excuses some give about it being their only choice and shit. How do the REST of us manage? Not everyone resorts to illegal activity just because times are tough. Deal pot if you want, but quit making excuses like you had no other choice. MANY people make it through rough patches without illegal income from drug sales. Some of us work a few more hours, put more effort into finding better jobs, or do without some of the finer things that we're accustomed to. Don't give me that "minimum wage won't cut it" crap. I have no issues with poeple who decide to sell. However, I find those that claim its the only way they'd survive to be...well...pathetic. Again, I ask you how the REST of the world manages?

You like weed but you think its dumb to sell it? Isn't that just a wee bit hypocritical? Does your weed just fall down out of the sky?

People want drugs. Some people are willing to take the risk to make the large profits from selling them. If you have a large stash of drugs and/or money, you'd better be prepared to defend it, 'cause the police aren't going to be a lot of help. If these people weren't around, we'd be smoking catnip and banana peels.

Read that again....."People Want Drugs". The honesty is so apparent in that little statement. Selling drugs is against the law, but it is a fact that unlike other illegal things, most people see no harm in dealing a little herb.

Users of other drugs see no harm in people selling them, either. Dealing drugs is a victimless crime, unless drugs are being dealt to those not qualified (not consenting adults) to make those kinds of decisions for themselves.
