Drug problem has simple solution: legalize marijuana
5/10/08|Owen Sound Sun Times - Letters to the Editor| by Alison Myrden - Leading Female Speaker for LEAP

Alison Myrden - Leading Female Speaker for LEAP

Editor:

I am writing today Re: MP Larry Miller's letter to the Sun Times, Tuesday, May 6, 2008, "Society wants to keep drugs out of schools; Judicial system has undermined hard work of police".

Speaking as a retired law enforcement officer and a legally licensed cannabis patient in Canada, I disagree that our police are being undermined by the Supreme Court's refusal of police drug dogs being allowed into our children's schools.

Just who's side are you on, Mr. Miller? Being caught in the middle of the drug war as a chronically ill woman, I can see today that our youth and our streets are in charge of this issue. THAT has to end now.

The only way to save our children regarding the entire scope of the war on drugs is to legalize and regulate ALL drugs the way our country does alcohol and tobacco.

Remove drugs from the hands of the street dealers, put an age limit on them and have the responsible citizens of our country take full control. This is thinking outside of the box.

An important public service announcement from our friends at Common Sense for Drug Policy in Washington, D.C., put it this way recently: Question: Why do more than 900,000 teenagers sell drugs but not alcohol and cigarettes?

Answer: Because alcohol and tobacco are regulated and sold through stores.

Please educate yourselves and your loved ones today about the war on drugs.

Legalize and regulate all drugs immediately in order to keep our children safe, those who indulge in this non-violent activity free from incarceration and involved in the latest harm reduction techniques and allow the critically and chronically ill people of Canada a safe, affordable supply of these much needed medications.

It's a win/win situation.

'Outside of the box thinking'? I call I logical and reasoning thinking, the way it should have been, the way it should be....
