| Dope smokers want equal treatment by governor 5/16/08|The Denver Post|by Mike McPhee - The Denver Post ![]() SAFER executive director Mason Tvert outside the Governor's Mansion on Friday afternoon. (The Denver Post) Marijuana supporters want to ask the governor why his young son can have a drinking party inside the governor's mansion while other citizens can't smoke marijuana inside their own homes without the fear of prosecution. Mason Tvert, who spearheaded the largely symbolic victory in 2005 when Denver voters legalized possession of one ounce or less of marijuana, held a press conference today outside the mansion at East Eighth Avenue and Logan Street, the same day it was reported in the Denver Post that August Ritter III has been hosting keg parties in the mansion. "The party was sanctioned by the governor and his wife, who said the only rules were no vomiting and no sexy time," Tvert said. "The governor should grant equal status to marijuana, to allow the partiers to make a rational choice to use a less harmful drug which is legal. "We're not against drinking. We just want the hypocrisy stopped and allow them to make a safer choice." In November 2005, Denver voters approved an initiative legalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana. The police department said it would continue to enforce a state law that makes possession of any amount of marijuana a misdemeanor crime. A statewide initiative in 2006 to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana failed. Last November, Denver voters approved another initiative directing police to treat enforcement of marijuana laws as one of their lowest priorities, similar to not using a turn signal or having a tail light burned out. Tvert set up his press conference outside the governor's mansion with a table, a sign, an empty beer keg, a 12-pack of beer and a half gallon of Jim Beam bourbon. Bantering with reporters, he accused the Ritters of a "party foul" by not allowing marijuana. During the laughter, he committed his own "party foul" by accidentally breaking the Jim Beam bottle on the sidewalk, leaving the bourbon to run down the sidewalk toward the driveway. He promised he would clean it thoroughly. ![]() ] |

| I love this guy. He is very intelligent. He has the talent to run someone's presidential campaign. He will always find a way to get his point across - usually with some humor involved - and he'll always find a way to get the press to come. SAFER is the best new-blood organization. Their argument is becoming "the standard" for the movement. The SAFER argument has no holes, because they would have been found and exploited by now.

| my govenor has admitted past weed consumption....but won't help us get it legalized here. And there is a good chance he will be next VP according to todays paper. One step forward and two steps backward in this war! He may be gay also according to rumors. You would think he would loosen up like Barney Franks has.... |
