I am still addicted to this game TEN YEARS after I started playing it.
There's just something about the randomly generated maps that I can't lose interest in. Plus, reaction time is not an issue in this game.

There was a great 'me-too' game from Microprose called Master of Magic that came out about that time. I went looking for it a few years ago and after searching the web and countless used software stores I found a buddy of mine had it. I burned a copy of his CD and installed it over Win95, but it's really unstable (It wants to run under DOS or 3.1).
If it didn't crash randomly every other hour or so I'd say it had what it takes to give the original Civ some heavy competiton for the top.
But it doesn't so I won't.

I was hoping that Age of Wonders was going to be the update of Master of Magic, but it turned out to be too story-based and thus was not really replayable.

Has anyone ever gotten Master of Magic to work properly?

Wow i have never heard of someone else playing master of magic, i thought i was alone all these years. It runs fine for me, god i love that game, i wish the multi player patch worked

The best real time strat/combat game has got to be Myth the fallen lords..

It was the first one that I ever seen that gave you so much camera control..

Gives a whole new meaning to the term, Arm chair general...

ok alpha centauri is really cool, but I wouldn't say as good as civ2. And man! I thought I was the only one playing master of magic! That game is so cool! But it has been years since I have played it, so I am gonna definitely install it on my new comp and see if it runs. Halflife is another cool game, and the multiplayer is amazing!! Counter strike especially. Great guns, great maps. But if I had to choose one best game of all time, it would probably be civ2.

I remember spending an enormous amount of time playing Civ and Civ2 (probabily second only to Counterstrike). I've played Alpha Centauri but Civ2 was the masterpiece

Civ2 is great, i can replay that WWII scenario for the rest of my life...
