| Tomorow my friend is having a poker night and i need some tips on how to play like a pro. Last month we had a poker night and instead of cash we put grams in so the incentive to win back then was important. There was five guys so the pot at the end of the night was 5gs, pretty damn good for a few hours of smoking pot AND playing poker! But tomorow there will be 8 people, pitching in $10 or 1g so basically i am broke and need money and pot. I've played my fair share of poker before but i'd like some advice, people will be smoking tomorow too so hopefully it will cloud some judgements!

| The best thing to do is fold when you got nothing and try to win big when you got something. People who fold the most usually win.

| be aggressive, they key to texas hold'em (and most cards) is aggressiveness....providing the people you play with know what they are doing.... if not, they are just gonna call you. Because they know no better. There's more... but you'd have to buy my book. ![]()

| Yeah, don't get "hopeful" with bad cards, most of the time you'll lose playing that way. Do your best not to give away your hand with facial expressions/body language, if it helps, "pretend" every hand is a pair of 2's. Don't show every hand after you win, you never want the other players to know if/when your bluffing and it keeps the game more interesting. When you get good hands, don't immediately look at your chips (most new players do this to see how much they have to bet with), a good poker player knows it means you have a good hand. When was the last time you got a bad hand and looked at your chips (unless you know how to bluff)? If you have any questions ask away, there are some pretty good poker heads here. |

| Get to know how the other players are playing. See as many flops early (if they're letting you get in cheap ) when the blinds are small. Watch your kickers. Don't over play your middle - low pairs pre-flop. There's so much strategy to holdem, it's not something a few sentences can do justice. It's very important to learn when to get out of a hand Good luck!!! |

| "tips" aren't going to elp you play better poker. Playing poker will help you play better poker. There is no magical "quick fix" for a game as complex as poker.

| Hmmm, lets see here? I've been playing Texes hold'em for about 23 yrs. usually in limit games, but in the last three years I have taken on the challenge of "no limit". If I could describe this game in one word, that word would be......" BRUTAL". This game only takes a minute to learn...and a lifetime to master! ok so your at a home game with friends, your starting hand is the first two cards each player recieves. Obviously...AA , KK , QQ , JJ ,ect; are called "pocket pairs" and are "GOOD" starting hands followed by say "suited connectors" ie; (10/9 hearts) or K/Q diamonds. Experience is your best teacher! lets say you are on the dealer button...meaning (you are the last to act) and you have pocket 5's, the blinds are at 10 and 20 . Now the first player next to the "big" blind calls followed by two more calls, then another player in front of you makes a huge raise. you need to keep in mind that there are atleast three players "behiend you" in this case, I would fold my pocket 5's as the possiblities of a higher pocket pair. and there are too many players in the pot. at this point your only hope would be to spike a 5 on the flop! these kind of hands can break your bankroll trying to "chase". in a nut shell, your first two "down" cards need to work together. like a pocket pair or suited connectors. or a suited ace, even an ace and a face card. now the flop comes (first three community cards) this is where you need to give yourself a quick reality check! if you caught a big part of the flop you might want to check insted of betting ( its called trapping) try to get another player to sense weakness from you, so they make a bet and now you have trapped them! you should take your time calling their bet,( hopefully ) if you check on the turn card they will make an even bigger bet, now you come in for a raise and BOOM you got him trapped in your web. now lets say you are dealt 10d 8d and theres 4 other players in the hand, the flop comes.....Jd 6h 7h and you are last to act. everyone checks to you...should you check?? should you bet?? well you don't have anything except a "gut shot" to catch a 9 for your straight, in this case I would through out whats called as a "feeler bet", just a small bet, if anyone has any part of that flop you will probibly get a call. if not you have just won a pot with a semi bluff. lets say one player made the call to your bet,but they seemed hesitant when making the call, it could be that they are on a "draw". so the turn card comes a 2s that card didn't go with anything on the board, I would make a slightly larger bet ( this is where you need to be able to "pick up" reads on players ) if they were on a draw its possible they will fold to your second bet knowing only one more card is left to come out. My best advise is to make sure your first two cards can somehow "work together", followed by the first three cards on the board thats a total of 5 cards...with only two community cards left to come. if you don't have anything in those first 5 cards fold and wait for the next hand. I'll try and get into one of our mj.com poker tourneys soon and show you all how to play and win.......! hope this was helpfull, good luck Stoney ![]() |
