Hashishi

Dunno how well this will kick off, but the idea is to get a multiplayer chess match going. A basic knowledge of the rules of chess and a freebie software program called WinBoard (Google) are all that is required.

To keep tabs we`ll use algebra (don`t be scared if you don`t know it, it`s dead simple). A chess board appears as below:



THIS video explains the process or read my explanation of the rules below.

Basically, after I get the first move rolling it will look like this:



and be written as "1. g4". Unless more than one piece can move to that square, that`s all you write. In the latter case the player would write down the column in lower case to signify which piece it is.

Pieces other than pawns have abbreviations. To move a bishop to the same square shown above (and, though impossible, in the sane turn) it would be written as "1. Bg4", for a king "1. Kg4", for a knight "1. Ng4", for a rook (or castle) "1. Rg4" and for a queen "1. Qg4".

If I were to be taking a piece on that square with, for example, a knight in that turn it would be written "1. Nxe4" - the "x" symbolising a capture. If that same move would be placing the opponent in check it would be "1. Nxe4+" - the "+" symbolising check.

It`s ridiculously easy to get the hang of, so just roll up a fat one get playing!

EDIT - In a trademark display of genius I`ve written the first move incorrectly. It should read

1. g4

and not "e4".

Hey Hash. I'll give it a go. I have a basic(very basic) knowledge of chess. Once I start I think it will come to me. Be patient. Don't be suprised if the moves I make, make you say "WTF is this idiot doing" because they will. I'll grab the software and get back to ya.
Also, If you're looking for a challenge, you may be disappointed.

hey i think this is a great idea hashishi...i'm not very good at chess but i do love to play....i'm going on vacation this week but when i get back i'll definitely check out that software and see if i can figure out how to play through here

Well, the idea is that once enough people get playing it shouldn`t matter what skill level you`re at. In fact, the challenge for the more advanced players can be coping with the decisions of the less advanced. The less advanced get to learn something and hopefully have fun and the same goes for the more advanced. ...Everyone`s a winner!

Once you`ve got the software simply make a move - the next person to move will move black and be playing on the black team. Make sure to set the "mode" of the game to "edit game". Once you`ve moved, the name of the move and the move number will appear at the top of the WinBoard screen. If it doesn`t, cycle back one and forward one with the arrow buttons on-screen until it does. ...You`ll get the hang of it!

Then post the name of the move here and wait for the next team`s move. Hopefully there`ll be more interest so I won`t be taking white`s next move. We`ll see how it goes, either way!

Sweet! The board looks as follows:



And the moves so far are: 1. g4...d5

I`ll keep it updated as often as possible - all anybody needs to do is drop a move into the thread every now and again and remember what team they`re playing. If it dies then I`ll just play the moves...even if I end up playing myself.

Which would be different from playing with myself. Yup.
