I have never smoked marijuana, or seen the plant in person, but today I was outside watering flowers and found this little plant with what looks like pot leaves. It is growing beside some hostas, and is a foot tall or maybe a little more. It gets evening sun (and some afternoon) and not a whole lot of water but enough apparently.

I didn't touch it, or smell it so I don't know about texture or odor.

If it is a marijuana plant, what should I do with it. I have no desire to use it. If I pulled it up and tossed it into the woods would it grow, or should I kill it before I toss it?

Looks like feral hemp to me (so yes, it technically is cannabis), but I could be wrong. It grows naturally all over America, infact the DEA spends hundreds of millions of dollars trying to get rid of it - idiots.

*ahem* It's as innocent as any other weed in your garden. Rip it out and throw it away if you want, personally, I'd keep the lil' fella around

So you think it is legal? That is the main thing I am worried about. If it is legal, I'll pot the little booger and sit him on my porch.

I have crazy neighbors who call the cops over everything and this thing is pretty visible from their yard. It sprouted up in a matter or 2 or 3 days...

no hemp is not legal either, even though you could smoke an entire hemp plant from the roots to the flowers and still not get high the DEA insists that it is dangerous and a drug, last year i think it was around 90% of the 'marijuana' plants found and destroyed by the DEA was hemp which is good for almost everything except smoking

it looks similar to a cannabis plant though but im not sure, get a better picture from the side and on the lower leaves, or even better take your picture over to Gardenscure.com it is the sister site to this one and is for growers, add a side shot of it and they will tell you immediately if it is


i just figured out why it doesnt quite look like pot, the serrated edges are to defined and the tip of it is almost flat, most will have pointed ends, and the stem looks to round, their are plenty types of MJ and no two are exactly alike

Good advice chadwick, post these pictures at Gardencure and they can give you the skinny on this plant. Honestly though, I doubt any legal trouble would arise if you tossed it in a pot and grew it. You could always say you had no idea.

That is my only scare...I hate getting in trouble of any kind. I'm a wuss.

I would kind of like to keep it though, it's interesting looking.

I've never seen a cannabis plant with a hairy stem. Also the leaves are the wrong shape. Cannabis leaves all come to a point.

one plant will not get you into trouble, depending on what state you live in, if you live in California your in luck, chances are they will just turn a blind eye to anything under 10 plants, Oregon is relaxed to and in Nebraska wild hemp grows everywhere(along highways, in gardens, and anywhere were their is soil, its like a dandelion there), but again i dont quite think it is a cannabis plant but i've been surprised
