Does anyone know a source where I can read about the origins of the common marijuana slang terms, ie. the "etymology" of the terms? For example, there is a site called "rapdict.org," that contains a basic glossary where you can look up a word or phrase from a rap song lyrics you've heard, and it tells you what it means, and how the useage of that word or phrase evolved. Is there anything like that for marijuana use? If not, maybe someone just knows the answers off-hand? I'm mainly curious about the following terms, as in how they came to be called what they are called:

*bowl
*bong
*roachclip
*hit
*toke
*pot
*dope

why is a roach called a roach, before i read/saw "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" i always thought it was beacuse it "looked like" a cockroach but after Hunter Thompson's lawyer crushed my ideia with these kind words "What the f*ck are these people talking about? You'd have to be crazy on acid to think a joint looked like a goddamn cockroach"

But since they were on acid and i thought roach was that little cardboard paper thing you put at the end of the joint for easeir handling, i have no ideia what am i talking about......

Roaches are short and fat? I dunno...but i do know the "cardboard thing" at the beginning of a joint is called a crutch, its not only a good place to hold it, but it makes the joint a lot less harsh. I never roll w/o a crutch, plus i make my joints look like cigarettes so i can at least be in somewhat of a public environment when i burn them down.

didn't you ever create any slang for pot related things with your friends? if you did, probably you'll be able to think of the meanings of most of the words you want. is difficult for me to explain any slangs you might wanna learn the origin, as i live in country where english is not spoken. me and my friends have already invented some new slangs to communicate just between ourselves, on the phone or in front of other people. most of the slangs are in some way related to what they mean (like "happiness" for pot ). just for slang used on the phone (and in other extreme situations) that we invented some terms that are completely not related to what they mean (we made a real code), cause a lot of times we're at the work, in front of parents, wife, etc...

i think i made a lot of synthax, spelling and grammar errors here. that's the consequence of toking too much while surfing the web

Que palavras que voces usam? Eu digo que 'roach' é uma piteira e voce? Que mais gírias voces usam? Chá é maconha, bolar é enrolar, beck é baseado (apesar que esse é usado no Brasil inteiro), Por fogo na bomba é acender o beck, e usamos TEMPO como referência a maconha na frente de outras pessoas. É infalivel, voce pode chegar e dizer "Meu eu tô sem tempo?" ou"Passa em casa mais tarde e nós vemos um filme e damos um tempo e depois saimos" sacas?
