I was curious, does anyone know why a water pipe is called a bong? Any information would be helpfull.

originally it was not called a "bong" at all, but a "gnob" which mimicked the first choking sound ever heard when using the water pipe. Gnob didnt seem to go over well because of the closeness to the "choking" sound, so Herman Wendtwhistle first called it a "bong" (simply changing the direction of the letters) in his paper entitled "water pipes and why we love them" published in the American Journal of Smoke and Smokers, vol 29 issue 4, pp 435- 465 (1909).
and I quote:
"From the smoking of a water pipe one subject of my study choked so hard he almost vomited he lungs up, and made a sound similar to that of the word "gnob." I therefore misused the term "gnob" and he was ill just at the thought of the word. When Mr. H returned at a later date for the next level of the study, I realized he was over his illness, just to be sure and as I handed him the water pipe, I asked him to take this "gnob." Mr. H began turning green and I could notice him visibly starting to get ill once again, so I called the gnob a bong by simply moving the fourth letter to the first postion and the third letter to the second postion, so on and so forth..."

so, there you have it, a small pice of pot history.
