So how did dude become a greeting between buddies?

The word dude originated as a victorian slang word for a man who was effeminate. its a variation of dud or duds, from the arabic word for cloak (dudde), and was a referance to fancy or foppish clothes. When vain, fashion concious city slickers wanted a taste of the west they went to a dude ranch.Dude was kept alive californian surfers and took on its current fellowship meaning freom a generation weaned on the teenage mutant ninja turtles.

Thats one of those words that tends to be over used when your high.

I can't help say it when I'm high... it just comes naturally, hah. Maybe that's how it became popular... smoke weed, say dude. Then gradually over time, it becomes less and less gay.
