I just bought a nice $45 bowl. It is a large bowl intended to accomodate many people; it holds alot of herb. The problem is that I'm a newbie and cannot get a hit out of the bowl! I put my thumb over the carb and suck as hard as I can, but cannot get a hit out of it.

Should I pack the weed in tightly or loosely? How much should I cut up the herb using my scissors? Should I remove the screen?

Anything advice to help me get a hit out of this bowl would be greatly appreciated.

You have to light it, eh? :P It should be fine no matter how hard it is packed, unless it is packed so hard that air can't get through. Do you have any friends that can show you how to use it? Some pipes are different but it should definitely work if you start breathing in as you light it..

No, none of us really know how to use it. We're used to cheap bubblers and joints; we just bought the bowl.

I cut up the herb with scissors, packed it really tight, then covered the carb, lit the herb, sucked, then let go of the carb...and nothing. No smoke.

Alright a few things

1) How big is your carb?

2) How big is the hole in your bowl?

If your carb isn't very big your going to require a lot more lung power. If the hole in your bowl is small it will also require more lung power. If both of them are small, it's a shitty pipe.

One thing I might advise is removing the screen (I am assuming its a glass pipe). Glass pipes don't need screens. It should help the airflow. Pack the bowl lightly but not too light, push it down slightly. Make sure you are getting enough flame on the bowl for a good hit.

Also make sure it isn't clogged anywhere, either in the bowl piece or in the pipe itself. You can easily check this by removing all the weed, covering the carb hole and blowing through the mouthpiece. If your not blowing air through the bowl hole than it's clogged and I'd suggest cleaning it in isopropyl alcohol or hot water.

It's an easy test and should be able to tell you how a pipe hits. If you can practically breathe through the bowl hole than it should deliver massive hits, if the air is barely flowing out of it and you have to blow really hard than that explains it, the pipe just doesn't have proper air flow... It's actually kind of a common problem with big glass pipes, at least in my experience.

Thanks. The carb and bowl are decently sized. I'll try those things, and take the screen out. Then hopefully I can get a hit.

Maybe its the weed itself too, make sure it's not wet. Wet weed never smokes well.

the best way would be to break the bud up till its nice and fine. the finer the bud, the bigger hits youre gonna get.

I'd get a grinder if I were you. Also, it sounds like you're just packing the bowls to tight.
