I've honestly never smoked from a joint, I have a blunt, but not a joint. I don't have much desire, either. Weed is just too expensive in this economy.

i prefer pipes because IMO they look cooler, but then again a joint is easier to hide if the popo is on your ass..

theres one thing i'm gonna reccomend and i think it's the best of all worlds: apples.

there's a way to make a pipe out of an apple, take out the stem and poke a hole to about the middle then poke a hole from the side to the middle, and if you really want you can put another hole to the middle on the other side for a carb. anyway, you put your weed where the stem was and viola, you have a make shift pipe.

pros:

1. easy to get, tell your parents you like apples.
2. if you get caught, get another apple.
3. if you get caught, your parents will get jumpy every time they see you actually eating an apple, and i think thats pretty funny.
4. to get rid of it, chow down.
5. you get the weed conservation that a pipe gives you.
6. you don't have to inhale paper smoke from joints.
7. good flavor.

cons:

1. you look like an idiot at a concert.
2. tempting if you get the munchies.

Honestly, you are just being careless. Try being more sneaky and doing it NOT when your parents are around. Hide that shit in a shirt folded up in the back of your dresser or in a iPod box or something like that. I prefer pieces because you don't smell bad afterwards and you get all the weed and it doesn't burn off the joint while you're not inhaling it. You can make aluminum bowls with foil, but that isn't very healthy. You could also smoke out of a bottle or apple (turining them into a bong first of course). A can can also be your last resort if it comes to that. Hope that helped you a bit.
