| Any wood will crack if not taken care of! I would clean it out wax it(have some one else wax it) then keep it as a convo. piece. Only smoke it when you know some one wont mind helping you toss some wax on it.I would go with the glass for now on, but answering your question any liquid weather water, alch, or spit will ruin wood same reason you paint your house. Wood is poris even hard woods they will all rot. Use that wax or if you cant rub it on dip it in some cooking oil and rub it down with a paper towel. Enjoy Link removed. No advertising |

| That is simply not so. My life's work to date has been as a builder. Hmm, something just shy of half a century logged in ![]() Wood damage, or lack of, is in direct response to the species type, how it was dryed, how it was milled, it's end purpose and how it was cared for. Quote:

It's all good. Rot? Yea, anything and everything on this planet will rot sooner or later ![]() But back to the actually subject of this thread, we are taking about pipes are we not? Probably the last thing in this world we need to worry about when it comes to wood pipes is rot, lol, well unless you bury it in the dirt or store it for years in an enclosed space with live spores from an already rotting wood product. Next...

| The big thing is to identify what type of finish was used on it and what type of wood it is, then, right sterbo? Can you (or, a trained professional) tell from looking or do you have to actually touch the wood to know both (or either)? |

| I have found the best thing to use to treat the inside of wood and bone pipes is honey. Sounds weird but its a great cure for the wood and bone and taste great over and over again. You dont need to clean it that often ether. DopeRecipes |

but most wood pipes are brier and most quality pieces are 'finished' with a wax , which as I mentioned earlier, is extremely easy to reapply. Some cheaper pipe manufactures use lacquer. I don't recommend those as lacquer is a toxic compound and even though one is applying heat to the inside of the bowl and not the outside finish I still don't like the possibility of residual flame heating the lacquer. And as I mentioned, the use of alcohol to clean the raw wood of the pipe's interior is S.O.P. You mentioned earlier that you had a wood pipe made from some kind of softwood. I would consider that to be something of an emergency smoking measure as softwoods do not make good pipes. Quote:

| It was a soft wood pipe, I realized after a while that putting it into the alcohol that it was a bad idea, but the damage had already been done.... It was a b - e - a - utiful pipe. I really wish it had survived or I hadn't been a moron. ![]() |

| I wouldn't soak it in alcohol. Take a qtip and some pipe cleaners, so those in alcohol and then go to work. Thats just my opinion though.
