I want to hear as many opinions as possible. I hope this thread becomes a true source of information on the subject.

A search on the internet noted several instances of alcohol soaking of archeological artifacts to displace water in a complicated protocol for stabilizing and preserving historical wood pieces. Alcohol soaking is used as the first step in of a process to replace water in the wood with a stable inert binder that will maintain the shape of the artifact and prevent further degradation. The fact that alcohol is used to displace water in archeological artifacts suggests that it might also work to displace water in green wood thus speeding up the drying process.
I'd assume this Jamacian pipe is of decent quality. After reconsideration, I'd think you'll be fine to soak it. I mean the pipe is already old, its probably dried out and isn't green anymore. I think you'll be fine. You dont even need to soak it, just dump it in with a pinch of salt and shake that sucker up.

Thank you for the assistance you have given.

Now do you see why I made a new thread to cover this subject? This thread is up to 3 pages long already.

This thread is about wooden pipes, but comments regarding the Vapor Genie are welcome as well, for people who may want that information. sterbo, I know you have commented, but I wouldn't mind getting more opinions from other Vapor Genie owners. If they soak their's in alcohol for an extended period of time, etc. Anyone else who has soaked a wooden pipe, of any kind, or their opinions on the best way to clean if soaking is not an option. I hope that covers it.

Are you talking about my hand carved Jamaican pipe? If so, I find it a very unique piece, that cannot be replaced, not anytime in the far future anyway. I would hate to totally screw it up to the point I'd have to throw it out.

i was addressing the original question; the soaking in 91% isopropyl, and stating that it was probably not a good idea, seeing as alcohol tends to permanently stain/ruin wood.

Yeah, but this is an old 'tempered' (no idea what the right word is, you know, worn in and durable...) wooden pipe. I'm pretty sure that alcohol wouldn't do a bit of harm to it. I mean, maybe if you poured a beer or whiskey in there, but isopropyl alcohol shouldn't do a thing.

i think this is a good idea. you figure- worse case scenario, and the alcohol stains the wood- it'll be totally internal. no one will even be able to see it without close examination and like a penlight. plus you know the iso will work to clean it out regardless.

spiral isnt the only one glad help you vick
