Geez, I'm a bit feeling like I'm languishing in the Twilight Zone ...
I'm sorry, but I'm not going to take one person's word that something is ok to do without some extensive research, including as many opinions or first hand accounts that I can get. It seems most people agree that it does damage the wood.

Maybe they don't want to have to re-treat their pipe, no matter how easy it may be. For me, it's an issue of extra work that I just do not need. I have enough trouble doing the things I need to do on a daily basis.

So, it would seem, in my situation, soaking a wood pipe in alcohol would not be a good idea. I have OCD, and really want my pipes/whips clean, as clean as brand new. I would want a wood pipe as clean, and it's just not possible, IMO.

IMO, it seems reasonable to say that it is safer and easier to clean a glass pipe than a wood pipe. At least for me, a person that demands perfection in my cleaning, wanting it to look like brand new. Using alcohol also helps with sanitizing as well. :P

Sterbo, thanks for saying i'm full of shit. Doesn't fix my pipe though. I soaked it for hmmm was from about 11:30pm- 4 or 5 pm the next day. 16 1/2h - 17 1/2h soak. Yay.

And i'm not saying it will damage your Pipe, just said it did so to mine. The split btw, is a product of drieng out. The alchohol, stained the pipe; thus turning the pipe from a Reddish/Dark brown hue to a lighter brown(with major loss of red, though I could still see it a little).

Soak your pipe, it's not mine, it's not my opinion which makes the deciding factor in your choice. Anyone can do WHAT THEY WANT!

Marijuana anyone? *takes a hit*

Again, I'm sorry for your loss.
But 17 hours? I can't fathom why anyone would do that. Not to blame you but it has no bearing on the reality of what we're discussing here. We're talking about cleaning, not neglect.
I know you didn't do it intentionally but to post an methodological aberration relative to an age old tried and true process is misleading.

Lastly. Alcohol will not "stain" wood which is why, in part, I questioned the commentary as a whole...

I actually appreciated his post very much, as it gave me a time frame for reference. I wasn't even sure how long it could be done, to get it clean , etc. However, I already mentioned how anal I was about having things clean, so an overnight soak would be something I would consider. I soak my glass pipes for a couple days.

Water and astringents from food cuttings compromise the core material insofar as 'natural oils'. OMG, what's a girl (or boy) to do?
When was the last time you soaked a maple cutting board in alcohol? Alcohol is a powerful solvent. Water and food are not. I've been working with wood for 40 years. Soaking it in alcohol is not advisable.

Go back and check my post, in which I explained exactly why I wouldn't soak it in alcohol. Just because you're old and have a strong opinion doesn't negate other people's input.

What, every year or so?
Now if only you'd stated that as criteria at the beginning we could have saved a lot of time on this issue eh...

I use a glass pipe for 1-2 weeks before I get out a clean one, and start soaking that one. I can't stand a dirty pipe, so I wont use it very long.

To get what was a fat ball of tobacco resin that was about 20-25 years old out. That's what 17 hours of soaking is for Plus, I started when I went to sleep, then had to get to work in the morning. Not much I can do about having to go to work.

Regardless, weed is weed is good

All the time Buzz. It has no deleterious effects whatsoever.
Unless of course you immerse it fully for 17, 24, etc. hours
Which, of course, no one who knows what they're doing, would do eh?
