Pipe residue softens up a lot when heated. I wonder if you could put your pipe in the oven, turn it on to "Warm" (170ºF), let it sit for half an hour, and be able to clean out most of the softened goop with a stiff piece of wire.

I'm not usually a "neat freak", but I clean my smoking equipment frequently. Pipes taste shitty pretty quickly if you let residue build up. Vapes get ugly and even clog with resin. I prefer the vapes because you can recover stuff that's like pure hash oil.

I would absolutely not put that piece in the oven.

Start as I've described and take things one step at a time...

Good,
so we don't need to talk about that aspect of it.

As such, I'd go ahead as I just described.

Vic - if and when you decide to do it and if it would make you feel more comfortable I'm happy to get online via IM with you as you work thru the process...

Thank you. I appreciate that. I still need to find a spare hangar...

Unless the hole thru the stem is very large then a hanger won't work. Even if it fits it's analogous to drilling a hole in metal. If you want, as an end result a 1/2 bored hole you don't start with a 1/2" drill bit. You start with 3/16 or 1/4 (or even less depending) and work your way up in size...

:EDIT: The point being that you want to start with the smallest diameter wire you can that is still stiff enough so you can make progress, albeit, most likely a little at a time.

Just a quick update re: iso and wood finishes.
I just purchased a VaporGenie which, in this case, is made of ash and is coated with what looks to be several coats of gloss varnish.

While the fact that it's gloss will make the finish more durable it also makes it very shiny which, once again, is not my cup of tea.

The very first thing I did upon receipt was to take and immerse the wood stem (only) in 91% denatured alcohol.
I left it alone for 30 minutes, extracted it and the result was simply that the 1st layer of varnish was removed. I wiped it down with water, dried it and inspected it. If I hadn't known what I had done I wouldn't even had known the difference from the rest of the pipe that had not been treated.

In the next week or so I will actually remove all the varnish from the pipe and refinish it myself with a different process, probably using a top grade wax...

Note - this is an excerpt from a post I made in a different thread. I posted only this portion because this part is directly applicable to the continuation of the discussion here.
