So i'm kinda new to actually buying my own pipes etc. how do i choose a pipe? what qualities do I look for?

Bong, Spoon, Pipe, Bubbler, Chillum/Bat

What material you want it to be made out of.
Glass/Pyrex, Metal, Ceramic

How big you want it to be.

How much money you're willing to spend.

And the design (the more complicated, colors, etc. the more expensive)

I have a small metal pipe, used to have glass but I sold it and I dont toke too often so its good to have a small piece thats sturdy and gets he job done right.

I'd go for an inexpensive glass piece first, make it something that just speaks to you, so you just can't help but take it home.
Smoke it up and consider it's pros and cons. Then go for another, perhaps a price point up, a different style etc. Then another,
and another. LOL, there's so many eh,

I swung by my local headshop and picked up my very first piece about a month ago. It was a medium sized, glass bowl with some bangin' colors and only cost me $50. Definately worth it so I don't waste time rolling and it hits great!

What are the cons of a small metal pipe, they seem so convinient.

Well on most you need screens and they have a sorta metal taste, a lot like foil something I pretty much swore off using again.

They are damn convenient very compact easy for a quick couple tokes then back on your way, but for serious toking I'd prefer pretty much anything over them be it glass pipes, blunts, bongs, even good ole J's.

pipes are my favorite way for smoking, for many reasons. but i strongly suggest you get a glass pipe. easy to clean, portable, flashy, and healthier. when getting your glass, make sure it is somwhat weighty, and thick, since you want something durable. nice carb hole, a wide bowl as opposed to a deep bowl, and test it a few times to check airflow. and hold it in various positions, make sure you got a good grip on it.

its always nice to know your pipe. if you attach yourself to a nice piece, you appreciate it more.

like thePreacher said, it changes the taste, where as glass is flavourless. it can also go bad over time, and use, it has to be the right metal, otherwise it can make you seriously ill. and they're incredibly annoying to clean in my opinion, compared to glass.
