I'm only approaching my second year of smoking pot, and since I started I've been doing it pretty much constantly. Due to my restrictive lifestyle (AKA, my mom's a hardass), all of my smoking has had to have been on the down-low, and I've just now got my hands on a decent, compact, metal pipe from a friend of mine (try smoking out of mostly soda cans and tin foil for a year... Not fun!). Then I realized... I have really no experience in cleaning out a pipe. I mean, I have a general idea, it's pretty straightforward, but do any of you guys know of the most clean, efficient way to go about getting all the shit out of it? What can you use to clean one out, that kind of stuff? Also, as long as I'm on the subject, just how healthy is it to be smoking all the resin out of a scraped bowl?

First off, smoking the "resin" (it's actually tar, but I call it resin too, less nasty) out of the pipe is about the worst thing you can do to your lungs, though to be honest I've smoked quite a bit of it too and it does get you high, it's just fucking awful for you. If you plan on smoking the resin you can just use a paper clip to scrap out the resin and then put it on a penny or something.

If you don't plan on smoking that nasty smelling/looking shit (again, I will on occasion, not proud of it) you can just soak the pipe in as close to 100% alcohol as you can find (rubbing alcohol) for a few hours/over night. This dissolves it and really loosens it up, you can then use a simple pipe cleaner or rinse it out, and bam! clean pipe. This is much easier....much much easier.

#1 smoking the resin out of the bowl isn't healthy at all, its probably the worst thing you could do for your lungs, but it still gets you high.

Buy some Isopropyl Alcahol (rubbing alcahol 90% and higher) pour some into a bag/cup/bowl whatever you want. put a fair amount of salt into the cup as well. And if you're trying to conserve the alcahol, mix it with water (you just gotta leave the pipe in the solution a little longer).

Put the pipe in, and wait anywhere from an hour to 24 hours. Since it's metal it probably unscrews, so disassemble it and put it in the solution.

A good amount of resin comes out with just time, but with a tooth pick or some Q-tips you could get it even cleaner.

You can take the pipe out assemble it or whatever, put some more alcahol in it and shake it around if you want. Once you think you've waited long enough and scrubbed it nicely, rinse it out with water.

SECOND OPTiON

Do the same thing except without alcahol you can use boiling water, since it's a metal pipe the boiling water wont have any negaive effects on it (except it'll take a bit to cool down)

Soak your pipe in Isopropyl Alchohol.

Take it apart, if its unscrewable.

Scrape your resin out with a paper clip, and if you must smoke it, put it on a coin, or some other surface...

Run water through it.

Repeat if needed

Youll be cleaning pipes like a pro in no time!
