What makes glass pipes so special? I started toking about 3-4 months ago and so far have only smoked joints and out my my homemade piece (stick that's drilled out, with a socket for the bowl). However I'm turning 18 in less then a month and am going to get a pipe as a present for myself.

So why is glass supposed to be so sweet? I kinda like the idea of having a wood pipe, seems more natural (dirty hippie i know, lol) but it also seems more old school. Like sitting on the porch watching the sun go down and sucking on the pipe. Please explain why I should or shouldn't go with a wood pipe.

I have a wood piece, same as yours, wood block carved into a cylinder with one end thining (the mouthpiece obviously) and its drilled out. Personally, I think it tastes like complete ****. Also, I dunno if you have this problem, but after hittin it for more than like 3 secs it starts to get hot as a mother ****er, and after like 6 secs it gets too hot to hit without burning your lips.

Personally, I like my glass piece much better and almost never use my wood one. It tastes much better.....it doesn't taste like wood, it tastes like weed. the mouthpiece doesnt ever get hot so I can hit it for as long as I'd like. And you can scrape glass pieces every week or so (depends on how much you smoke, could be more like a few weeks if you're a light smoker) and get a big ass ball of resin that can equal like 3 bowls of weed . And if you smoke the resin from you wood bowl....well thats just ****en nasty dude, and thats all Im gonna say about that. Also, if you buy a good glass piece you dont have to worry about replacing screens and such like you do with the socket bowl. Just toss the trees in the bowl and light it up.

But anyway, if you've never used one, just buy one and you'll see what I'm talkin about .

Yeah, glass pipes taste so much better is the main reason they are so popular. They actually have some health benefits as well. Practically any other material actually releases fumes when heated to a certain point. This doesn't happen with glass, so the only vapors you're breathing are the ones you want to be!

Whatever you do, if you buy a glass piece, do NOT tap it against your makeshift ceramic candle ashtray to try to get the cashed weed out. It will break.

Hell, the right question is, "Whats not great about glass pipes?" in which the only answer would be it breaking

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this, but glass pipes come in colors that can't be done on any other material. You'll never get an inside out wood, metal, or clay piece. You usually can't get multiple colors except on glass. In other words, besides the functionality, they look better.

I didn't mean that I was gonna keep my socket pipe. I meant buying a wood pipe vs. buying a glass pipe. I agree that my socket pipe doesn't taste good, it's only drilled, not carved or anything, so there's like jadged pieces of wood that I'm sure occaisonly get on fire and I inhale some of that. However I don't see this being much of a problem with a nice carved wood pipe from a headshop.

I'd love to hear more input in the wood vs. glass debate. Anyone have wood pipes that they like? Why does everyone else like their glass pipes?

edit: the scraping for "reisen" to smoke is a non factor, cuz it's actually just tar and it's really bad for your lungs. I'd rather buy some more ganja and save my lungs.

It's not just tar.

Some people like the taste of a wood pipe mixed with the taste of weed. Sure, you'll get some methane from the wood and probably a bunch of other stuff, but if you like the taste then get a wood one. Wood pipes are also less expensive.

In terms of functionality/performance and aesthetics, glass is vastly superior.

Suggested online headshops: grasscity.com, everyonedoesit.com/headshop, northwestglassart.com, and, my personal favorite, happypipes.com. There are lots of others, but I've found the happypipes to be the best, and the people on the phone there (in Hawaii) are really friendly when you order. Keep in mind that they will ask you your age and lots of other questions, so if you're not 18, then make sure to have planned responses written down or memorized so that you don't tell them you're 20 accidentally. My guy was really nice and got excited when I answered all the questions right.
