i think that the glass has a layer in it that when it becomes opaque, the "invisible" layer become visible. My pipe changed from yellow to blue/purple in about 20 smokings. I think im gunna go clean it now, see if it takes a shorter time to change.

oh crap whats that good website that sells pot stuff? hemp city or no grasscity.com I think. Yup grass city. They explain it better there, but basically the resin collects on the glass and thats what the "changing" color is.

And if you thought your pipe had paint in it........why would you even consider smoking out of it?

take some rubbing alchohol and let it soak in your pipe, should work goodly. Just make sure you clean it nice and good after, heck boiling it after wouldnt be a bad idea.

Pipes also change because they are "fumed" with gold and silver which, as it heats changes in tone, thus changing the appearance of the color of your pipe. Pink on a gold background before it changes might become red as the gold darkens, for example.

Hard to say without actually seeing it, but if he is scratching the ribbons off, then the pipe will only change color from tar.

So I have gotten word from my friend that the ribbons in my pipe DO change the color. I'll have to post a pic of my pipe totally cleaned and when it is color changed.

You should try rubbing alcohol (91%) to clean your pipe. Just soak it in it for a while, does that job quite well. Glad to hear you didnt ruin your pipe, its always a shame to see a nice piece ruined.
