i do the exact same thing, works wonders, it turns the "resin" into a goo that just wipes off,
you dont even have to soak the whole pipe, just the bowl section really, unless your whole pipe is clogged with resin just make sure all the alcohol has evaporated before you try to hit it, it would be pertty horrible to light your face on fire because you had a pool of rubbing alcohol in your pipe.... also make sure its rubbing alcohol, and not a cup of jack daniels

i got a buddy who boils his glass pipe, that works well too, its just too much work for me to bother with

as for the smell, i kinda like the smell of a nicely resined up pipe, i think it adds character to the piece... or maybe its just a smell i remember from childhood, heh i was too young to know what that smell was coming from my dads room, but then i grew up and put two and two together

You're right about not having to soak the whole pipe. A lot of times, I just soak half a pipe cleaner with rubbing alcohol and run it through and it works great. That is if it isn't bad. I try not to let my pipes get bad, as I am obsessed with keeping them clean.
