Hey I am in the process of looking into buying my first pipe and or bowl. The other day I was looking around and noticed a different variety of pipes and bowls and had a few questions. First of which does it really matter if the pipe/bowl has a hole on the side/front of the bowl?(If so what does the hole do?) And secondly does it matter what the pipe/bowl is made of? (glass, acrylic, wood, metallic) When I first smoked I smoked out of a glass bowl and it was the best smoking experience ever. I was thinking of getting a glass bowl just for old times sakes but I was wondering what you guys out there liked better and why.

glass is usually your best option. anything made out of glass (bong, pipe, etc...) hits smoother than metal. plus they're prettier, but usually more expensive. the downside is that glass can, and will, be broken eventually. a metal pipe can be broken down for easy concealment and metal doesn't shatter when you drop it. also, if you get a metal pipe, stay away from copper, led, and aluminum (just to name a few) because there are toxins in the metal that you inhale. i think brass is ok, but can't remember for sure. i don't have a metal pipe so...yeah. and i don't know much about wood pipes.

the hole in pipes and bongs is called a carb. when you smoke out of a pipe that has carb, you cover it with your finger while you inhale. if you think about it, there are three holes in the pipe (the mouthpiece, the bowl, and the carb). by covering the carb, you eliminate one of the holes. that way when you inhale you force the air to come in through the bowl and out the mouthpiece. once you're done inhaling, take your finger off of the carb and breathe in one last time to get the rest of the smoke out of the pipe. bongs have carbs too, but they can either be a hole you put your finger on or a slide system where you take the bowl out of it's hole. anyway, that's all i know. good luck!

In my opinion, I think you should go with a nice little glass spoon. They are very handy, easy to conceal, and some have pretty deep bowls for their size. I got a beautiful little color-changing glass spoon off my dealer for $25 w/ a fleece carrying pouch, and I love it. I believe it to be a gem. It's been through alot too, but hasn't broken yet. That's another pointer, being sure of the quality glass and thickness you are getting before purchasing. You don't want a thin, sh!tty one. Ah well, don't know if I've made much sense but...

Anyway, hope I helped.

Glass is good, but, have you guys smoked out of a stone pipe? Glass, like metal, will eventualy get hot, but stone pipes won't.

Carb? never heard of that. I've only heard it refered to as a choke.

Stone pipes are pretty sweet, I have a soapstone pipe that hits really well.


Yup, around these parts we call them choke holes I had never heard of a 'carb' until these boards....
