I just soak my pipe in a mix of a cup of water and a cup of alcohol (roughly), and let it sit over night. Afterwards, when most of the loose gunk is out, I put salt in the bowl, then let some hot water from the tap pour in the bowl, just so the salt goes in the hole. I just plug the holes with my fingers and give it a good shake. It gets rid of everything, but may take a couple shakes to get all the stuck on gunk out.

How about first running HOT water from the faucet thru the pipe for a while to loosen up the junk

I would stick to rubbing alcohol and rock salt. It will work, your bong will be virginized.

Alright. So yesterday I decided my glass bowl needed a clean, so I found this thread and decided to do this. I put my bowl in a plastic bag, poured the bag half full (enough to submerge the entire piece and then some) with nail polish remover (not 91%, but it is basically just rubbing alcohol, I'm not sure if there are any other additives, but it won't hurt to use it) then sealed the bag, put it in another bag to make sure there would be no leakage, and shook it up then let it sit for a little over an hour. It got about 95% of the resin off, there is still a tiny bit of resin on the inside glass layer on the bowl, but it's not affecting anything, so I am willing to let that go. Overall a very easy way to clean your piece, afterwards just rinse it in hot water, dry it out, and you're good to go!
