| ... and I can't make up my mind about what to get. It's maybe a bit too early for me to post this, as it'll probably be another month before I actually buy something, but then, when it comes to something important like this, I'm a delibrate man. My experience with different paraphernalia is rather limited- I'm smoked out of two different glass spoons, and one god-awful crackpipe a friend specifically bought to smoke pot out of (does anyone else buy a crackpipe for pot when he can buy glass? Seriously? I know it's cheap, but come on). I'm thinking about getting a glass pipe and maybe a dugout and bat too, for toking alone and in public. However, I'm not sure if I want a spoon, or a sherlock. Does the shape change the experience? The only thing I can think that would make a difference is the length of the pipe, allowing it more time to cool, and making it more pleasurable to smoke but perhaps a smidgen less potent, but then, I've never smoked (or seen in person) a sherlock- I just think they look amazingly cool. The bowl would be meant for hanging out and smoking with multiple people, so I'm already sure that it won't be tiny- in fact, it'll probably have a bowl the same size as the pipe I smoke out of most often, which works very well with about 4 people. Also, what about glass bats? Having smoked out of the crackpipe, I know that smoking it out of metal is not as nice as glass. But are they very delicate, like is it unadvisable to use one with a dugout? I can't imagine that they'd be as discreet as the metal cigarette-looking bats, but I'd really rather not buy something metal... should I just skip it, and hollow out a cigarette to make a spliff when I want to smoke in public? Like I said- this is by no means pressing. I'll be scoping out my local headshops a bit before making any final decision (and of course, when I DO buy something, I'll be sure to post a pic here on the forums), and I do know that I'll be buying locally, as much as I love some of the pipes I see online... but anyway, any advice for someone looking for a first piece would be very helpful. |

| another good thing about a sherlock is the lessened chance of sucking in some ash. It still happens, but sherlocks have such sharp curves it makes it a bit harder for ash to reach your mouth. Sounds to me like you know what you want though. A glass spoon/sherlock and a dugout are two fantastic pieces to own for a newb. You'll quickly find that when you walk into the smoke shop, asthetics and looks can be just as important (if not more important) than a good smoking piece. |

| completely off topic, but what do you mean by a "crack pipe"? The only crack pipes I've ever seen WERE glass. Not every metal pipe is a "crackpipe" either. While I perfer glass, theres MANY different kinds of metal pot pipes one can buy

| Well, I've never ACTUALLY seen a crackpipe- one used for crack, that is. That's what my friend called it, and I took his word for it... It looked kind of like this: ![]() Either way, though, it was unenjoyable to smoke out of, and sketchy looking as hell. No aesthetic appeal. |

| Not a CRACK pipe, its called a CHAMBER pipe, and they are actually QUITE common. I won't lie....they actually come in quite handy. Great for camping and whatnot, or even work....you can load a bowl at home, put the lid on, and carry it in your pocket all day without it spilling. I don't have one anymore, but I actually wouldn't mind picking another one up for the reasons I listed.....there are times when they are just a lot more handy to use than a glass piece. Any time you need to carry a loaded bowl, or may be in situations where a glass piece might get broke or lost, such a pipe is handy. FYI- most "crack pipes" are nothing more than a glass tube, commonly found in gas stations with a 'rose" in them. Take the rose out, find a piece of Brillo pad, and viola...you have a real crack pipe. I know this, even though I've never even seen crack smoked, let alone done it myself |

| Alright then, I'm sorry for the misconception and will pass the info on to my friend. However convenient they might be though, do you not find it to be unpleasurable to smoke from one compared to a piece of glass? I found that it tasted quite different, in a bad way. If I can, I'd rather have the dugout and glass bat I mentioned earlier, if that's a viable option. Granted, though, the hole on the cap IS very small and makes it far less likely that anything will fall out of the bowl. But, in addition to wanting a pleasurable smoke, part of my desire to own a piece comes from the artistry of the pieces, and I feel that pipes like these just do not compare in that category. Perhaps, though, that is a matter of personal preference. |

| Like I said, I PERFER glass, but theres a time and place for metal pipes too. No, they don't look as nice, and yes, the taste is affected, but you still get just as high, and they are basically unbreakable, very much UNLIKE glass pieces. I'd advise against a glass bat for your dugout though. Its not so much that they are fragile, but they lack the sharp end the metal bats have, therefore making them impossible to load the conventional way. In fact, I've got a brand spanking new one in my gear box at home. Once I realized you couldn't load it by the tried and true "poke and twist" method dugout users are accustomed to, I had no use for one. Even loading it by hand is tedious and, IMO, pointless for a couple of hits. if I have to go through al that, its actually easier to just load a bowl in my spoon. |

| Hmmm... alright, then, thanks. It's a good thing I asked about that before going out and buying one... though that just makes me question whether I should get the bat at all. I'll wait and see what they have at the headshop, I guess. |

| Yeah I was about to post something like "just go to a headshop and pick out one that your eyes gravitate to "Remember that sherlocks are harder to transport than regular spoons or bats. Even if they're the same size, the shape can make it awkward to keep in your pocket.
