Hi, I'm thinkin of getting a metal onei and I wanted to know if there is any risk from the metal. When you light it, does it release any bad chemical in the metal or anything?

No. After lots of use it will get grose from resin and is difficult to clean. It also smells worse. Also it tastes much worse than out of glass, just like drinking out of a coffee can would suck compared to a glass.

just buy a glass pipe.. u can get em for under 10 bucks..

metal pipes have their uses. The durability of a metal pipe make it better for smoking in some situations like camping and such. Smoking at home glass is king, no doubt.
Like the previous poster said, glass is superior for taste and cleanliness. Metal pipes wont hurt you, well, if you dont count the occasional burnt fingers from them getting and staying so hot.

If durablity was a big enough issue for me, I would just get myself a glass chillum (also called a bat).

THey look like this:

Pretty much all chillums are inexpensive, but some are thicker than others. Try to find the thickest one you can. They are so simple, so duarable, and so small I think you'd be much better off with a chillum than a crummy metal pipe.


But since Im not too rough with any of my paraphernalia, spoons, bubblers and bongs are all I need

I thought chillums were supposed to be smoked differently from a bat?

As I understood it, a bat you're supposed to smoke like a normal pipe, or more accurately because of the way you hold it, a cigarette, while a chillum is supposed to be held upright with your hand cupped at the bottom, so that you're not directly smoking from the chillum. Can anyone clear this up?

Guess it's a bit tangential from the OP... but I definitely agree that metal pipes are unpleasant to smoke out of. But they are undoubtedly more durable. I just don't like 'em, though.
