Glass is really the king when it comes to good smoking pieces. I think people who prefer metal or wood pipes (the only options that've recieved any votes at this point) prefer them because it's all they've used, or it's just what they happened to use originally and get used to.. 'Cause really, smoking glass is just so much more enjoyable.
