this is kinda a stupid question but me and my friend were arguing about whether or not ur supposed to hold the carb when u inhale

It's not whether or not you're supposed too... There is no direct rule, and absolutely no need to hold it, or let go. You will still get smoke in your lungs either way. Maybe not as much if you hold it, but enough to get you high. Although, some people do get irritated if you leave the chamber full of smoke, which could be stale. but then again, if the cherry isn't going, you could easily take the rest of the remaining hit when holding the carb.

I take the entire hit by letting go of the carb at the end, or let go a couple times during the hit, but ending it by letting go of the carb and inhaling. No smoke remains in the pipe. I like to get the most out of my hit.... But if someone decides to not inhale their entire hit, I'll gladly take it, and then proceed to take my own.

If you don't hold the carb while inhaling, you aren't going to get much of a hit. Air takes the path of least resistance, so you'd get mostly air coming in through the carb.

The carb has two purposes. If a hit is too hot/too concentrated, you can use the carb to dilute it with fresh air. At the end of a hit, opening the carb gets the last of it into your lungs and clears the pipe of stale smoke.
