Unhappy Help! Repair for a $200 piece!!

Hello! I have a beautiful sherlock piece from 2002 made by Darby Holmes (sp?) that I paid $200 for, and one day last year after a long smoke I dropped it in my lap on top of my heavy glass paperweight that was already sitting there. The carb hole and the glass around it broke out in six small pieces. All the pieces fit together perfectly I'm pretty sure, with no holes, and the bowl is intact and a flame wouldn't be touching the break points... is there any glue that would do a really good job of repairing it and not look gross (I recently saw part of some informercial about some new 'magic' adhesive that holds anything)? Or do any blowers out there know if it would be possible to repair it that way? I have plenty of pipes, its just this one is extremely awesome (Darby Holmes is a pretty well known blower from Oregon or Washington), and very sentimental and I desperately want to repair it. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Honesty, most glass "repairs" I've seen using any adhesive have been pretty ghetto looking. I've seen it work accecptably on clean, simple breaks, like the handle of a bong bowl, or a pipe's main stem breaking cleanly in half, but I just don't have much hope for a 6 part break repair looking decent or even being possible, the way you describe it.

What would be the best kind of glue if I were to attempt it? (Don't worry, I'll be sure to post a pic of my attempt, haha). Also, I guess by your response it would not be possible to get a glass blower to 'melt' the pieces back together or something?

Question Anyone?

Does anyone have any opinions about a glue that would work? I am keeping this pipe forever one way or another so I would definitely appreciate any assistance in repairing it! Thanks!

I don't think you should use any glue if you plan on smoking out of it. I would say find a blower to replicate the piece if you can, otherwise get a new one. As far as finding that particular blower who will want to work with this piece, I have no idea where to look. It's going to be hard finding a blower who will want to mend your piece, especially if its 'dirty' -- that is, it has resin in it... You may get lucky and find someone though.

However, any type of glue you'd be using is going to be under a lot of heat and strain, so its likely fumes or vapors could come out. Even if your not applying the flame directly it's likely to heat up the glue enough because of the proximity (unless this is some gargantuan pipe). Releasing fumes isn't something you want when smoking a bowl... the gases are likely noxious or even toxic.

You could piece the bowl back together using simple super glue and retire it up on your shelf for aesthetic value.

I have no idea what their policy on "cleanliness" is, but theres a head shop in Ft Collins, Co that advertises glass repair. Its called Kind Creations, but I don't have any other contact info at hand.

Thanks for the replies guys! As for cleanliness, I have boiled the pipe a few times and plan on soaking it in alcohol again for good measure, so its virtually spotless.

But your saying that it is possible to repair broken pieces?? Like they just heat it up till its all red and melty and stick it back together?

With the glue plan I was gonna just have other people smoke out of it until it got coated in enough resin... I guess thats slightly evil though...

Exactly, I really want it fixed because it is literally the coolest piece I've ever seen.

SOME repairs are certainly possible. However, I don't, as I said earlier, think they'd be able to piece together a 6 part break. At some point, you've got to come to terms with the idea that this piece may be gone, at least in usable form, for good. While some repairs can be done, I don't hold a lot of hope for your pipe. From my understanding of glass blowing, it involves a heck of a lot more than getting it "all red and melty and sticking it back together". Truth be told, superglue and a shelf might be the best plan for this pipe's future. I think its functional life is likely over

Thanks! Whats the best glue for glass??

Its got a pronounced design so I was skeptical about it being meltied back together in a pretty way.
