My basic idea bic pen or marker glued to a socket. Would this work?

no because the pen and glue will melt. Get something like a brass tube and hook it onto a socket somehow with something that won't melt.

Me and my friend made a chillum out of a seashell one time. It worked pretty good and didn't have a bad taste at all. (it was clean and wasn't actually at the sea in the sand, it was a random one in his house) We put an aluminum foil bowl with holes poked in it at the fatter part of the shell and sucked through the skinny hole at the other end.

Here's a pic to best show the shape of it. It was like a cone shaped chillum, worked great for the time we needed it.

i did that with the seashell too. We just screened the end of our shell though.

you can get electrical caulk or heat resistant caulk and attach the socket to a metal pen

so, me and my friends did this the first summer we started smoking, and i thought it was pretty common, but i guess not. We call it a pen hitter, but you get a pen tube, and a metal pen tip, and just shove the pen tip (narrow end first) into the tube.
And we've never experienced melting or a different taste. It works like a charm. Only problem was the bowl is a little small...
