| Newbie to the board here....I did a search for this info but didn't find anything of use to me. Quick question -- I just got a rolling machine (yes, I'm lazy) and I haven't tried it out yet but I normally put cardboard filters into my j's and was wondering how to do this with the roller....I would imagine you just place it in with the weed at the end you want it at.....is this right? Any advice would be great.... |

| wow...what helpful advice.... i WOULD try it but i'm a grown up who works in an office and i highly doubt my boss would be into me rolling at my desk. i fully intend on trying it later but i thought i would save myself some aggravation and see if anyone had done this or had any GOOD advice on how to do this. |

| What?! Your boss doesn't let you roll joints at work?! What is this world coming too! Technically, that cardboard piece you put into your joint isn't a filter because it's not really filtering anything out. Instead, you would call it a crutch because it holds the end of the joint open. A filter would be similar to that seen on a cigarette, the cellulose material that actually filters and traps tars. You can actually buy filters seperately (for people who roll their own cigarettes) at any tobacco store (e.g. not a gas station) or headshop. I guess the only thing you could do is to either pre-roll the cardboard crutch so it semi-stays-in-place and roll it up normally, or you could use the machine to roll up the joint, leaving a little less bud near the end where you want the crutch to go, that way you can just slip in the crutch and push it in there. So yeah, if you can't get it to work, your best bet would be to buy the filters because they won't "unwrap" like a piece of cardboard would and it actually would filter the smoke (and keep it open, a double bonus). You'd be killing two birds with one stone ![]()

| THANK YOU!!! Yeah, I call it a filter even though it obviously isn't...(it's a regional thing, I suppose). Thanks for the tip....I'll try both methods tonight... |

| you dont need a filter after you roll it if it's lose enough that you get particals in your mouth, just use a nail or something and pack the weed down on one end and you should have no problem at all. |

| I figured it was a regional thing, most people just call a crutches a filter. Just a pet peeve I have with marijuana terminology And to the post above mine: I think he uses the crutch just to keep the joint end open so when you are sucking on it the moisture from your lips doesn't close it up. That's really the main reason for a crutch, so you don't have to keep opening it back up if it gets wet or resiny (is that a word?!). |

| Yes SHE does use the filter/crutch just to keep the joint open. Personal preference for me, when I started smoking (oh back in the day) my friends always rolled theirs with cardboard crutches in them so I just grew to like it better that way.
