I have been making hookahs and bons and ****. My friend told me to put a hole in the back for my thumb or something. Why do I need this and how do I use it?

The hole is called a carb, and its used for clearing the chamber of smoke, its kinda like a little rush hole.

Does anyone know any SAFE ways for making homemade bongs....cuz so far not many people do....

you can buy a bowl or use a chillum, and take some bamboo stick and use as a stem. then you take a glass bottle and get a diamond drill and tape where you want to drill then just stick it in there...
alternatively i think you can use a plexglass tube and just take a square piece of wood and glue to the bottom and drill in that..
i can't see why that would be dangerous

You can make a bong out of almost any container that is hollow -- anything from the humble coke bottle to a big, expensive glass vase (if you have the tools for cutting into glass). Bear-shaped honey containers work especially well!

You can make a bong with a carb like Megaweapon described, or you can go to your local headshop and buy a stem and bowl to make a lift-off system. Bongs with a lift-off system don't have carbs; instead, you pull the bowl out of the stem and air rushes into the chamber, pushing the smoke upward into your lungs. Lift-off systems work best for larger bongs, as a general rule.

I've made hundreds of bongs,but my best ones are from glass bottles, expeciallly goldslager. just go to the hardware store, get a glass/ceramic drill bit 1- 1/4'' and one 1/2'' drill 2 holes. Use a varible speed drill on slow.It takes forever to get the holes all the way though but it's worth it . I tried to send a photo of my bongs but the file was too large. you guys keep callin it a carb, what is up with that? Here in Michigan, we call the hole that you use to clear it a SHOTGUN hole. Any of you heard of that before? Its so weird how terms can change from different parts of the country.
