they're the cut off ends. I saw them off with my trusty dremel tool.

those are pretty cool, R. i never really liked ghetto homemade plastic bongs, but the idea of using some glass bottles seems straight. i wish i had a dremmel/bit like yours, i have so many nice bottles that would work good... until then ill just keep on hitting my glass bubbler and bong

I made a bong last year using the same kind of bottle. It had a makeshift bowl i made with a metal saltshaker top, and the smoke travelled up, down, right, left, in a long see through tube so taking the first hit was fun, because you could see the smoke travel a long way through the tube before hitting the water

yea, making bongs is fun. The dremel tool I use (a multipro) is about $100 if I recall (and I don't). The bits you have to use are carbide, or better yet, diamond. The bits are really important. The test tubes and the big glass graduated cylinder come from my school. An important thing about making bowls from test tubes is to wrap the tube with electrical tape above and below the cut so that it doesn't shatter. Here's a picture of a vaporizer that I made from a glass dome and a soldering iron.

I dont know if its the fastest but I can make a small gravity bong from a supersized fast food cup and a big soda bottle with one of my metal bowl pieces. This only takes a couple of minutes if you have everything around you.Got the job done quite well when I was younger. Nice to have a portable gravity bong too. Steamrollers are the fastest thing you can make though.
