| Aluminum foil is coated with something to keep it from oxidizing. This boils off when heated, tastes bad, and is probably not what you want to be inhaling. There is also a possibility that the aluminum itself will outgas. There is a suspicion that aluminum contributes to the development of Alzheimer's Disease. I don't use pots and pans with aluminum cooking surfaces and I certainly wouldn't smoke out of an aluminum foil pipe. If you must have a homemade metal pipe, it's easy and cheap to buy some brass pipe fittings at Home Depot and build one.

Below is just a brief example of toxicity specific to a few of the many metal alloys in the market place. Why take any chance at all when there are so many inexpensive pipes constructed from, for the most part, safe materials like brier and glass? Brass is a metal alloy of Copper and Zinc, with copper content ranging from 58% to 95%. The 'gassing' reaction of copper with oxygen requires precautions when temperatures exceed 700 C. All metals create odors when heated and although the metals themselves can withstand temperatures of thousands of degrees they still release harmful toxins when heated. Copper Compounds - - copper has been found to be highly toxic to animals in test situations, but there has been little testing in industrial circumstances involving people. Fumes of copper oxide are poisonous, irritating the lungs and intestines. It causes metal fume fever; recovery is usually complete in 1 or 2 days. Eyes and skin are sensitive to copper. There is no conclusive evidence about long-term exposure. Good ventilation is recommended for processes that involve heat, leading to the formation of Copper oxides. If the metalsmith find some type of dermatitis developing, he/she may want to wear gloves when handling copper-containing alloys. Etc... .
