The thing with setting a fire in my backyard is I live at home with my mom, and such fires would probably lead to some awkward questions. What I'll do is I'll ask around and see if there is a kiln to be used in these parts, and if not, well I still have a few designs to fall back on.

That'll work fine..if you have a kiln. My friend's mom owns a pottery store, and i've made two sick bongs that work great, but i used replacement bowls and downstems that you can buy at any headshop. Good luck.

Exclamation Is this gonna kill me?! Hahaa

So yesterday I was bored and seeing as I lost all my paraphernalia to the po's I decided to make my own. I used "polymer" clay, like sculpey, fimo kinda stuff that kids play with and make little food and animals and stuff outta. IT ACTUALLY WORKED. No lie. But after smoking out of it I realized that it wasn't very... effective and sort of made us feel a little weird, like my chest hurt which is not normal. Does anyone know if smoking out of a clay piece releases any toxic or harmful fumes? I mean, this piece is really tight and I wanna keep using it, but I don't want to f*** my brain up or die or nuthin. Haha.

feedback would be tight.

Peace-

Is polymer clay safe to use?
Polymer clay is, generally speaking, not dangerous at all for ordinary use. There are a few basic safety rules you should keep in mind to avoid any problems: don't accidentally eat bits of the clay, be careful not to let the plasticizer in the clay get into food, and don't burn or scorch the clay during firing.

Are there any dangers from firing the clay?
The main thing to remember when firing the clay is not to let your oven temperature get too high. If the clay gets hotter than 300° Fahrenheit, it can burn, and burning PVC gives off toxic fumes.

To avoid any chance of burning the clay, get an oven thermometer and calibrate the oven you'll be using. It's common for home ovens to be 25 degrees off the temperature on the dial, and if your oven runs hot you may be firing the clay at too high a temperature. Fire in a well-ventilated room; open your kitchen windows, and if you have a stovetop fan, turn it on during firing. For an extra margin of safety, some clayworkers fire in a toaster oven or portable convection oven which is placed outside, on a deck or patio.

Polymer clay normally gives off a slight odor when firing; this is nothing to worry about and not a sign that the clay is burning. Burning clay smells acrid and may cause your eyes or throat to sting. If you do burn a batch of clay, turn off the oven, open windows and turn on fans, and leave the house for an hour or two to give the fumes time to clear.

Thumbs up Clay Pipe

So, i just went to good 'ol walmart, and purchased this stuff, it's called "Sculpey" it's a modeling clay that can be baked in the oven, i made 2 pipes and a small bubbler.

The bubbler probably won't work, but the pipes look pretty sweet, i'm planing on painting the outside with acrylic paints, i am planning on painting one like a candy cane, with red and white stripes, and a red peace sign on the bowl.

Shall be suite, i'll try to post pics when i'm done.

I have a question too though, has anybody heard about this not being safe or anything? I hope it is, cause i want to make more, that are good. (the first ones are kind of crude)

Also if anybody has any painting or design suggestions, i would love to hear them =]

Thanks

just looked at the web site, said something about polymer clays, and if the stuff is flexible it is not normal clay, seems sort of like a foam. Not sure it would be safe, I believe normal clay, that orange/red stuff is o.k. but I'm not sure. I wouldn't smoke out of it though.
Try holding a lighter under a piece of it and if you see smoke, or you smell something besides the butane, it would probably be bad for you if you do.

Yeah, it's not realy clay, i was looking at some info on tobacco pipes, and it was talking about to use a 50 50 mixture of honey and water on handmade wooden ones to keep the wood from burning, i went ahead and coated the bowl and mouthpiece with this solution, think that will work?

I have no idea about that.
I've made pieces out of homemade playdough (flour, water, salt; not hard to get the portions right) and smoked out of them without any problems though, if you want to give that a shot.
