Default Moulding Clay

Hey everyone, just wondering - I have wanted to make a bong for a while, and I picked up some modeling clay today, would that be a suitable material for a bong? I have a bigass hunk of metal im gonna use for the bowl, so I have that covered, but just wondering if the water will soften the clay after it's hardened.

Oh by the way the clay I bought is "non-firing" air hardening clay.

Yeah man, it should be good after it completely dries. Just make sure it is BONE dry before using it, or the water may soften the clay. Good luck with all and by the way, you can also make a bowl out of clay. Just make sure it's non-toxic. Have fun!!

Cool Thanks for the reply. I'm gonna try and make it pretty nice, decorate it and all. I'll post a pic if it turns out alright.

Yeah I was considering what I could use for a chamber, but honestly it doesn't seem that hard with clay. It doesn't even matter if it doesn't look great, as long as it works.

if you're goign to work with clay, and you plan on smoking out of it, i recommend that you fire the piece in a kiln. And if it is going to be a "bong" or anything else that might hold water, you're definitely going to have to glaze the piece also.

if you just dry out the clay and then put water in it, it's goign to soak the water up. By glazing the piece, it's basically like putting a layer of melted glass all over the piece, thus making it water tight. And by firing the piece in a kiln, there will be no chance of the piece soaking water or changing at all.

Thanks for the advice

Hmmm - maybe I'll make it a 2-piece thing, a round bottom with a detachable tube, then I can access the round part to varnish it, or maybe I can just attach the top piece after I varnish it Oh well we'll see.

I like this idea a lot!

I think you should definately glaze it and find a kiln to cure it in, but this is a really cool idea, and I like it.

The problem with firing it is that it's a bong, and I don't really want it seen What I think I'll do is just put a finisher on, see how it does. I can give it a few coats, I have time on my hands.
