| Alright, I have two different types of sockets, which do you think would be better to use? ![]() The bowls would actually be about the same in terms of volume, the 2nd type is thicker. What would be a good way to get the first type to form an airtight seal with the wood part? Any other suggestions on the design of it?

why use a socket. why not just drill about a 3/4 inch hole where you would put the socket and put a sceen in it. my favoeite pipe is home made from an antler. about 4 inches long. a 3/16 hole drilled the length and a 3/4 inch hole for the bowl. it works great and ive had it for about 5 years.

easy on the flame though. you dont want your pipe to catch fire. ive made a few like that and eventually they burn. they cost nothing though and are easy to make. if you ever find a piece of antler though, it works very well.

If you have a decent sander you can make pipes into sweet shapes, and it'll be perfectly smooth to.

Or you could just have amazing carving skills and carve your own shapes. Not that I can, but someone, maybe.

the only way i found to make an airtight seal for the first type of bowl/socket you showed was to just drill a hole the exact same diameter as the bowl/socket and then hammer the bowl/socket into the wood. it makes it pretty tight, but be careful because it may crack the wood.

the harder the wood the better. it wont catch fire as easily. you could also try soapstone. that will never catch on fire.
