I need ideas for something to make with a 2 liter bottle. I've made bongs and hookahs and a whole plethora of other things. I was thinking about a waterfall, but if you have ideas for something more original it would be much appreciated.

I tried to make one but it didn't work. Could it have been the downstem?

Just the other day i made a big pipe made out of two letter bottles. First i cut a small hole into each bottle at the bottom. Then i used a plastic tube that i got from a cigar put it into the holes on the 2L bottles and used cocking to seal it. Then i got a spare mouth piece from a my trumpet and used it a a bowl. At first i was going to use it with water but i tried it without and the smoke is SOOOOO smooth.

waterfalls are imo a hit or miss creation (literally)

sometimes they work, other times they dont.

2 liters in my exp, work very well since a lot of water is draining.

so yes, your downstem/bowl could have been the reason.
