does anyone know what type of glaze is used on bamboo water-pipes or are they unglazed and just the outside is polished?

I don't know about you but i wouldn't smoke out of bamboo unless the bowl was glass or metal and it was away from the bamboo. As far as glaze/polish goes i think they are just polished though...

I've smoked out of a wooden bowl in a bamboo bong I made, it worked fine.
I would be sure to avoid burning any kind of glaze or polish of course, this was straight bamboo from the tree I used.

As for what's on it, I'm sure its some form of staining and waterproof coating, maybe some polish

I've seen them plain/polished, shellaced, and varnished. The shellaced one was a POS - water left spots on it.

Why? People have been smoking out of bamboo pipes for centuries without any problems. It's no different than smoking any other kind of wooden pipe. I have a bamboo churchwarden with a briar bowl that's one of my favorites. The long stem really cools the smoke.

i like the wooden pipes and the bamboo pipes. for some reason they make me feel more... fashionable! lol i hear the longer you use wooden and bamboo pipes the better it gets.... ionno... me gusta. i'd like to get my hands on some bamboo to make my own someday

That's SO true Buzzby! I've been looking for a nice wooden bowl with a long stem...it really does work wonders to mellow it out!

Back to bamboo. We had a friend years ago with a bamboo bong...that had a nice bamboo bowl, that, when pushed nicely into the side of it, looked simply like a stem stickin' out the side! We LOVED smoking out of that, and it always gave a smooth hit. And not once did we get bamboo poisoning!
