| A bullet is a solid object. You can't smoke out of a bullet. A casing is the brass part of a cartridge that holds the bullet. A cartridge is the finished product that you put into a firearm, consisting of a primer, powder, casing, and bullet. You can't smoke out of a cartridge unless you're suicidal. ![]() What is it that you have?

| Funny story.... When I was about 8 or so, I fount a cartridge in the parking lot of an airport while visitng grandparents. I don't know what caliber it was, but it was likely 7.62mm. I thought it was cool, and being in a mode where I wanted to be an astronaut (and also being near Kennedy Space Center!) I picked it up.... So that evening I'm playing "rocket" with my new toy on the living room floor. My grandfater, a 25+ Army veteran who served in WWII & Korea freaks out and snatches it from me. YEah, he was a serious hard-ass. He asked me where I got it and did I know what it was... I answered honestly out of fear.. Always feared my grandfather... So i was bummed because my "rocket" was taken away. After breakfast the next morning, grandpa calls me out to his workshop. He set up the bullet in a bench vise pointed at the huge oak tree in the yard. He explains to me what the bullet was and why he reacted the way he did. He picked up a hammer & a punch, warned my mom & grandma about a loud BANG they would hear, and then punched the primer on the back of the cartridge. Scared the snot out of me, but we went to the tree and saw where the bullet went in. I understood then, by golly! ![]() Although... It wasn't until I was over 30 that I wondered... What the hell was a bullet doing in the parking lot of the airport?!?!?!? ![]()

1. Don't put a flame to it. 2. Don't hit it with a hammer/punch. 3. Put it in a vice. 4. Remove the bullet by pulling and wiggling it with a pair of pliers. 5. Dump out the powder. 6. With the casing pointing downwards in the vice, do the hammer/punch thing, setting off the primer. It might be wise to wear gloves and goggles, just in case. 7. With a skinny punch, punch out the primer from the inside of the casing. 8. Clean the interior of the casing thoroughly with a wire brush. 9. Wash the casing in hot soapy water. Make sure to clean it thoroughly. Some primers contain mercury. 10. With tin snips, cut the neck of the casing into several strips, which you can fold inwards to make a kind of bowl. 11. Smoke like a chillum. If that seems like a lot of work, it is, especially for an undersized brass chillum. I used to make .30-30 casings into roach clips by flattening the neck in a vise, drilling a hole in the flattened part, and screwing it to a copper alligator clip. For that, you only need steps 1 through 6. I never had to do that because I used casings from cartridges I'd already fired. | |

| I've got to echo buzzby here.....what the heck was your grandfather thinking??!!?! His act was FAR more dangerous than merely playing with a loaded round (cartridge) would have typically been!!!!!! I can't believe anyone who knows anything about guns, or even simply physics, would attempt such a stunt. I think MY dad would have tanned my hide for attempting to discharge a cartridge in such a manner (but did nothing but encourage my ever-growing ammunition collection, consisting of ammo from the earluy 1800's to today)! Gun safety is a big thing for me, and when I see people blatantly do things that violate the laws of common sense, not to mention gun safety, it really bothers me. Thats one of those "mistakes" that could have easily killed or maimed someone, and to think he thought he was actually proviodng you a SAFETY LESSON by doing that.... ![]()
