Hello. I am 35 and tried a join for the first time ever this past Monday. I have to say that the feeling I got from it was wow... even on my first time. I was completely mellow for the whole day.

So naturally I want to do things right. I got some stuff from a friend. It was full of seeds which I was told not to smoke as it would give me a headache.

I spent about an hour going through .25oz tonight pulling out all the seeds - but what are grinders? Do they take the seeds out?

Any advice for a noob would be appreciated.

wow, first time at age 35? thats pretty sweet. well, better late than never

grinders just grind up your herbals so its easier to pick out the seeds and stems.

Welcome and congratulations on your first toke....we call .25oz a quarter round here and seeds are pretty much useless unless you are gonna chill with tha gardenscure crowd.

Do you have a "head shop" in your area? You know, a store that sells bongs and whatnot? If so, here's my advice:

First, the rulez: Never say words such as "pot," "weed," "bud," "reefer," etcetera while you're in a head shop. You're likely to get the boot. All those pipes, bongs, and rolling papers are for tobacco and fragrant herbs. ;-)

So with that in mind, get thee to thy local head shop, tell them you're a new smoker, tell them your budget, and put yourself at their mercy. Like most stoners, they'll probably be very helpful.

I recommend you walk out of there with the following items (assuming you're about 65% sure you like smoking weed):

1. Cheap plastic grinder. One of these will work fine. Nice metal grinders can set you back 30 or 40 bucks in a head shop.
   
2. An inexpensive glass pipe. What's usually referred to as a "spoon" is probably what you want; it's just a basic pipe that's easy to keep clean.
   
3. Some large rolling papers. I like Zig-Zag Slow Burning King Size papers. They come in an orange pack.

Grinding your weed makes a big difference in your smoking experience. Ground-up weed makes for smoother, more consistent hits. And a joint rolled with ground bud is much more likely to burn evenly.

I usually break my buds off the stems by hand and separate them into smaller chunks (pulling out any obvious seeds at this time, if there are any). The chunks then go into the grinder, which gets 6 or 7 good twists.

Once you have a pile of ground bud, you can put a pinch in a bowl (you know, the part of the pipe where you put your stuff), or spread some onto a paper and roll it up.

Hello and welcome to the lounge. I'm 33 and have been smoking for well over a decade

skidoo gave you some great beginner advice. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head...make sure you buy some screens for your pipe/spoon so the weed doesn't shoot through the pipe into your mouth. I know a lot of people who don't use screens as they don't grind up the weed but I use my Space Case (if interested in a really good grinder and you have the $$ do a search for Space Case and a ton of threads will come up)

Also, I'd invest in a cheap rolling machine unless you know how to roll. Considering you're a beginner...I think you might be better off with a machine. They are really cheap (at least mine was) the head shop can show you how to use it - if not, ask them how.

Hope you stay around and add some stories and experiences with smoking here at the lounge. Always great to have some older people join. The younger people here make me feel so old

Yeah, I edited my comment above about the "cheap plastic grinder," because my original post sounded like I was bashing high-end cases. The Space Case is a quality product, no doubt. Definitely not somebody's "shop project." :-)

Welcome Prior. Just as everyone has said, do some searchin around on these boards and youll come up with information on anything and everything. I too would suggest getting a bowl, because Id imagine you cant roll quite yet. You dont have to grind your bud if you smoke it in a bowl, but you must take out the seeds and sticks. Lookin forward to seein you posting up some questions.

Oh yea, props on smoking at 35. I think thats real dope trying it your first time now.
