Hi, I am a law student and I have a possession ticket on my record (received court supervision). There are many entry-level federal jobs that I am interested in, such as working for the patent office or maybe the securities and exchange commission, or others like clerking for a federal judge. I have heard of employee questionnaires that ask how many times you have used pot, and supposedly if you answer too high, then you cannot be hired. Does anyone happen to know about this sort of thing Last edited by smokey-robinson : 07-04-2008 at 09:09 AM.

I have no idea what you are talking about: employee questionnaire with #-of-uses cutoffs?????? Most applications ask if you have ever been convicted of a felony and a few now are asking whether you have been convicted of a drug offense (misdemeanor or felony). The drug test has a cutoff if that is what you mean? When you get to be a lawyer, I hope you are able to make your meanings better known.

For example: "How many times have you smoked marijuana in your life," versus "how many times have you smoked marijuana in the last year?" Some say that if you have smoked more than five times you can't be hired. | |

I have never heard where the employer has a set criteria for the amount of smoking sessions you have had. I didn't mean to sound mean, but your post totally confused me.

It has truly gotten to that. Most plants I work at want to know if you have ever been CHARGED with anything. Then you have to explain away the outcome. Thats when they decidde if they want to hire you. I love being anAmerican, but am afraid of my government!

I just love when people come here and ask for help, then when someone tries to help, they get a groan for their efforts. ![]()

I hope you weren't refering to my reply, I truly was trying to add some constructive insight. I have been contracting for over twenty years to the nuclear industry and have seen the trends in the wording and interpretations of the questions. This is why i responded. I was only trying to provide insight, not insults.

Nope, you didn't give me a groan nor did you ask for advice. You tried to help. I had never heard of a question on an application asking how many times you have broken the law and the employer deciding to make that a factor in the hiring decision. I do know that if the OP has a conviction for any drug offense, he might have a difficult time getting a job in any of the positions he described.

this is off topic a bit i know, but why wouldn't the person applying for the job just report they had only smoked pot 3 times, or give a low, acceptable number for whatever the inexcusable behavior is. is there a camera following me around that i don't know about??? big brother really is watching? how do they know if the job candidate has smoked a 100 times or 1000 times or 4 times? all they can do is take the candidates answer, right? am i missing something?

Supposing someone were a lawyer and misrepresented facts on a federal form, the consequences could be quite harsh. Even for a non-lawyer, lying on such a document is probably perjury. As a lawyer, supposing you just appear to be lying, the result could be bad. So, having a possession ticket, I don't suppose the situation would be very comfortable if I were asked about lifetime use. People with possession tickets probably did not only smoke three times in their life, right? There seem to be people on both sides of the fence on the issue of how bad it is to have simple possession on your record. Some will say nobody cares about weed. But it's hard telling if they are thinking about federal positions. It's really frustrating because I just want to work. And for a young lawyer, the government is often among the best places to get experience. And, about big brother - no there aren't government cameras installed everywhere, or at least not to my knowledge. But think about how much data is out there on things like myspace nowadays. I know someone who is possibly going to be violated on his parole because another someone reported a picture of him drinking beer (against his parole agreement). The picture came from a myspace page. How's that for big brother? | |
