| Personally I grow more and more disgusted with our law enforcement here in the USA everyday. Just curious who else feels this way. Also I'd just like to ask the question (this could be a poll question but I would like to hear reasons also ) Who feels that law enforcements role has changed from the stated "Protect and Serve" to my what I feel they really do now, "Harass and Abuse". Sorry for the rant. Looking forward to responses. |

| No. I doubt you'll find much agreement on that sentiment from the members of the forum. It's not the LEO's fault marijuana is illegal, talk to your local legislator about that. Last edited by Trocisp : 08-05-2008 at 08:05 PM. |

| Im not just talking about marijuana laws though, I am talking about the people who enforce them. While I admit there are a few exceptions (Phuzz and other non-powercrazy officers) but the general police force seems to me overall to have forgotten the point of being in LE, to protect the people. It may be just me, but it seems that people and their safety, liberty, and health are just an "obsticle" police have to work around in order to get their arrests or make their quotas. This is what disgusts me so greatly. Last edited by disheartenedwamerica : 08-05-2008 at 07:42 PM. Reason: sp. |

| No U.S department HAS arrest quotas. This just goes to show how quick you are to make assumptions without knowing the facts. Quotas are actually ILLEGAL.

| As TM said, quotas are illegal. That's why someone using quotas was news. This was an illegal exception to the rule, not the general situation. I don't fault the police agencies because they have some bad apples. That's just human nature and you'll find assholes in every profession. I don't see any institutional support for the kind of bad behavior you're saying is the general situation. What I do see, unfortunately, is a "blue wall" when officers' actions are questioned by civilians. That needs to change and I think it is changing. Agencies have largely accepted that they must have some kind of civilian oversight and a means for citizens to voice their complaints and be heard. I've been ripped off by a few potheads in my life. Does that mean that potheads are bad people? I wouldn't want to be a police officer. Seeing too much of the seedier side of life would probably make me suspicious of everyone and indifferent to other people's pain. I admire the good people who are willing to take on this responsibility. Unfortunately, there aren't that many of them, so police agencies have to hire some assholes, too.

| My opinion is that law officers are still "Protect and Serve". My opinion is the "Harass and Abuse" comes from people breaking the law and then whining when they get caught and say they were not treated fairly. Marijuana is illegal. I know that. If I get caught. Oh well. It's illegal. For now. |

| I believe that cops are originally to protect and serve. Sometimes, power overwelms them. But that is human nature. Politicians, Supervisors, some 17 year old pimple faced kid who becomes assistant manager. They all have a potential of abuse. But, I'd like to say that a large majority of the people who are to protect and serve are good people.(With the exception of some L.A. cops and the cops in Florida in the Hoffman case)

| "quotas"...no...BUT(and please correct me if I'm wrong, Phuzz) it is my understanding that most LEO handbooks have "averages" in them. Example: State Trooper handbook might state something to the effect of " A good Trooper hands out 15 speed violations in a given 30 day period." So if you wanna be a GOOD Trooper you nail 15 a month but id you wanna be OUTSTANDING Trooper you should exceed that number. Not stated but implied. |
