| I was wondering what one should do when pulled over by a cop and you are either stoned or have weed hidden in the car (or both, as it usually is). I have been qustioned about red blood shot eyes before, but told the cop my contacts were just irritating me. Since the weed was hidden, and no smell, he let me go with a ticket for running a stop sign. Anyway, Ive been caught before to, and know that it is best no not smoke and drive, but I always find myself in a car with weed. So, what is the right things to say to cops to get off? |

| My boy just got popped a few days ago. I was like a block away from his house. We usually smoke in the neighborhood because it is safe. He had just got done loading a bowl of AK-47 and a sherif pulled up out of nowhere and walked up to his car. With out even smoking the bowl she could smell it. He decided to be difficult so she called the K9 unit and sniffed all of his **** out. SO don't be a dick because if the call a dog you are as good as f=cked! I have seen a dog find a joint in a pack of cigs stuffed under a seat! THat is pretty impressive and scarry! Just avoid cops at all costs. |

| I have seen a dog find a joint in a pack of cigs stuffed under a seat! THat is pretty impressive and scarry! I've seen a dog detect a single seed. Or show where a person who had a bag in his back pocket had been sitting in a seat. But we decided to unscientifically test how good the dog was. We put a pistol in a bag of pot and left it sit for 30 mins. Then we hid the gun (something the dog would not normally sniff out). The dog immediately found the gun, based on the second hand smell of close contact. How does that sound?

| if you have pot in the car, you're already making the choice to take a risk right there. if you've been smoking in the car, they WILL be able to smell it, i can guarantee...i got caught smoking in my car and the smell was obvious even though i'd only taken two hits....play it cool but if the cop knows you have pot, don't bull****, because they'll probably just get annoyed at you wasting their time. when i did get caught hotboxing i got off completely free-no ticket, no nothing...partially because i started crying, or just got really lucky thing to do if you're caught is just be respectful/cooperative and you will probably get off easier...and if you're a girl, never underestimate the power of waterworks ![]() maybe the cop will take pity on you

| What to do when pulled over: 1) Pull over as soon as safely possible. Don't wait a half mile to pull over. 2) Don't make furtive movements or reach around or under the seats. Keep your hands on the wheel, and tell your passengers to keep their hands on their knees or in their laps. 3) If it is at night, turn on your dome light. 4) Once you stop the car, turn the engine off. Also, turn the radio off. 5) When the police officer asks for your license and registration, tell them where they are so they don't get concerned that you are making a quick movement, and get them slowly so that they can see your hands. 6) Be polite. Use the word "sir" or "maam," and don't say things like "what seems to be the problem?" or act annoyed that they have stopped you. Just be cooperative. 7) If they ask you about drugs, hey, that's your call. But, I would say that if you just have a baggie or a few joints, be honest. Tell them how much you have and where exactly it is. That will be your best chance at being let go with just your stash confiscated or maybe a citation. It's certainly not a sure thing, but its your best chance. If they are asking, they probably have reasonable suspicion already, which means drug dog on the way, which means probable cause and search likely. If you have not been smoking in the car or driving after smoking (therefore showing signs of drug use), following numbers 1-6 will avoid you ever getting to #7. And lastly, remember, police officers are out there doing a job and their number one priority is getting home safely at night. Anything you can do to help them with that will be appreciated, and the more comfortable they feel, the better off you will be. Alex |

"Just a citation" isn't as simple as it sounds. In most locations, a citation still leads to a criminal record, you just don't get arrested for it. Now go try to get a government job, or apply for a publicly funded school loan. You're toast, you're a convicted criminal, like it or not. Now I realize that many cops out there would just let you go on your way after throwing the stash into the wind. But not all are as rational as our friend Niteshift. Many would thank you for helping them do their job, then throw the book at you regardless. There's no way to tell which one you're dealing with. It's your right both in the States and in Canada to refuse a search without probable cause. When you give up this right, you're tossing the sole protection you have out the window. Sure, they might pull out a drug dog, but they might not. Let them work for their search. In Ontario at least, I have yet to meet a drug dog in "real life". Sure, they bring them around to events and whatnot, but never have I seen one doing it's duty. Not every force is going to cart out the dog, and you've basically admitted guilt by turning over the weed. It's too much of a risk to leave it up to the officer's discretion. A criminal record is not something to **** around with in my opinion...

| Yeah, that's why I said it is your call. I can see what you are saying, but it is my personal opinion that you are going to be best off overall (including considerations like plea bargains and lighter sentences if you aren't just let off the hook) if you are cooperative and honest. But, everyone can make that decision according to the circumstances, I guess. And, like I said, if you aren't driving under the influence and you don't smoke in your car, following #'s 1-6 should help avoid you ever being asked about drugs in the car. |

| When I was busted, I got off some what easy. Heres the story: It was Xmas break (college kids) I was smoking a Scooby Doo bong that I had bought my brother for Xmas and we decided to take it for drive. The bong was one of the best Ive ever smoked, and I was really stoned. I was pulled over for driving 46/30 (it was actually faster, but the cop only clocked it at 46). I drove a new VW Jetta, and the Scooby bong was huge, so my friend tried to cover it with his legs in the back seat. The cop walked up, asked us if we had been drinking, I said no (that was the truth). He starts looking in the windows, flashing his flashlight, and sees the bong. He tells us all to get out. My brother admits its his bong, and the cop searches him (finds some weed), then my friend (finds weed and a pipe) and then me (I had nothing). He then searches the car, and find another bag of weed (mine). He talks to all of us one on one in his car, gives my brother and his friend two citations each (para and possession) and me a ticket for speeding and a para citation. Anyway, we gave the cops everything. We never argues, or gave them trouble. Once they found the bong, we knew that we were screwed, so we just old them where everthing was when they asked. It could have been worse, but I think our cooperation helped. He never mentioned my bag of weed, he let my friend us drive home, I never got a DUI, we never got arrested, and no one ever found out except us three. My brother hid some weed in his shoe, which the cop never found. My friend and brother got the para charges dropped, and a litering ticket for the weed. I got 1 yr suspended sentence and 6 hrs community service (we used different lawyers, bad idea). |

| Well, I have gotten off twice, situations I'd rather not repeat... Here is my story... Story #1 we were cruising up to san Antonio to go camping and were smoking out a big phat doobie...my friend was in the backseat rolling another j as well. We kept the weed in a lunch box at the time... we get lit up for speeding. So we managed to toss the doobie out the window and my friend in the back shut the lunch box and put it under the seat....then....in a moment of brilliance, she spots the OFF on the floor (lots of mesquitos in texas) and sprays it thus reducing the gonja smell in the car. Cop never suspected a thing...got a speeding ticket, but small price to pay when we had over an ounce in the car. Lesson: keep OFF in the car...(j/k) Story #2 I was driving to dallas about 1:00 in the morning and I had a small ammount of weed on me and a pipe. Now here is the interesting part...I had half of a peeled orange on the console that I was eating to stay awake....I will come back to that part. I got lit up...and pulled over...(this was the second time I had been pulled over on that trip, first cop just let me off with a warning for speeding)...The cop is immediately suspicious apparently because of the ORANGE (said the last guy he pulled over who had an orange in his car had several pounds of weed in the car..), asked if he could search. I was so nervous....I said yes of course. He starts to search then comes back and tells me if you have anything, tell me now. So I did...and it was such a small ammount that he said it would not be worth the paperwork to write me up for it. He also kept bragging that he was the cop who busted Nate Newton...(prick..).. Lesson: If you do have something make sure it's only a small ammount, and ALWAYS cooperate with the cops. I do believe though, that it is much easier for a Chick to get away with it than a guy. That was the first time I had ever been searched. Now, I dont speed. Ever. And if I do have weed in the car, I make sure it is only a small ammount. |

| Most of the time when I read these stories, I see that the person has broken the most important rule to follow in a car; at most, only break one law at a time. If you're carrying, don't speed, don't do stupid things, hell, make sure your tail lights work. Even if there's no weed on you, don't speed and make illegal lane changes, or anything like that. A cop is more likely to not even pull you over if there's only one noticable infraction. Not guaranteed, but it definitely helps with the probability calculations. NeedTaPass, while it's important to co-operate when you're pulled over, it's more important to only co-operate to the extent that is legally neccessary. Your first mistake, and you guessed it correctly, was to consent to a search. You got lucky, but what if the cop was having an off night? I really don't understand why people are so willing to give up their protected rights in police encounters. Stick to your guns, you cannot be penalized, and it's better to avoid the judicial sector completely than to have a "better chance" in court. You will not be punished more harshly if they have to work to get PC... |
