| Anybody know what security measures US customs uses to find drugs at airports. I know there are sniffer dogs, but are there any other electronic devices that can "sniff" the chemical properties of certain drugs? Also...how sensitive are drug dogs to the smell of Marijuana. If someone had 1/8th of weed on them would the dog be able to smell it? |

| "but are there any other electronic devices that can "sniff" the chemical properties of certain drugs?" You bet. In fact, in one way, the machines are better than the dogs. Most dogs smell only 4 drugs (and their derivatives) or so. The machines smell dozens of different drugs. Also, the same machine sniffs explosive, whereas most dogs sniff only dope or only explosives, but rarely both. One of the more popular machines in about the size of a Dustbuster handheld vacuum cleaner. Only problem is its expense. "how sensitive are drug dogs to the smell of Marijuana. If someone had 1/8th of weed on them would the dog be able to smell it?" Oh yeah. Try one seed or stem. We did an experiment with our Lab. We put a gun and pot in a plastic bag for 20 mins. Then we took the gun out and hid it. Waited about 10 mins and let the dog search. The dog found the gun that had not actually touched the pot, just been close to it for 20 mins. An eighth should be no problem. By the way..............Customs isn't the only people running drug dogs in the airport. More than likely, you'll deal with a airport police dog, especially if your flight is domestic. |

| I fly back and forth from Ohio to Puerto (and vice versa) all the time. The last time, coming from Ohio to Puerto Rico, I brought about an eighth with me (1/8 of an ounce or some ****) and nothing happened. I had it wrapped up in three plastic bags, all doubled over, and I sprayed cologne all over it. Plus it was in a suitcase with all kinds of clothes all around it. I didn't even think twice about it. I was pretty confident it would work. And it did! And I have never ever seen any drug dogs in an airport before, lol. | |

| I know what you're sayin Niteshift, i have an untrained beagle, and everytime it gets into the house it goes into my room and starts scratching at the now thoroughly sealed hole in my wall where I kept a very small ammount of MJ for a few days all wrapped in plastic etc. Also, everytime ive ever been to the airport i've seen dogs, i guess it just depends where you are. | |

| IndoorGanja, This is slightly off the topic but good for general knowledge. U.S. vs Stone (not US v Stoned), is the case law pertaining to dope dogs, and it specifically states that drug sniffing dogs don't constitute a search. Whether it be you, your luggage, your car (exterior) etc.....If a dog alerts on something, then a seach can be conducted based on that. | |

| SOG, Just in case you weren't being funny, I'll address your question. We have drugs for canine training use that have either been purchased or turned over, from evidence, by court order. We have a DEA license to purchase, possess and store heroin, cocaine, meth and marijuana. Usually, if the drugs are common enough, like coke and pot, we have a judge order the transfer from evidence that is set for destruction, rather than buying it. The drug is weighed when checked out and when checked back in. It must be accounted for at all times and is kept locked with only the handlers and supervisor having access to it. Further, statute exempts LEO's from possessing, transporting, selling, buying drugs in the course of their official duties. |

I can understand you having the drugs for specific purposes and I can understand the process by which it may be divested from evidence for that use... what I do not yet understand is the purchasing license. Here are my questions in as serious a tone as they allow:
