So if a cop pulls you over and you and/or other people in the car have red eyes does the cop have enough evidence to search your car?

That seems to be the main problem while driving for me...we can usually cover up the smell with cigarettes or cologne along with the windows rolled down, that's not a problem.

I wouldn't think that just having red eyes is enough for a cop to say that's probabe cause. I mean, there's other reasons why your eyes get red (allergies, dry eyes, etc).

You do not cover up the smell, I can assure you. You may not smell it (olfactory fatigue) but the cop will. This is a classic example of the "Teenage Trifecta".

Weed, other people, and a car - pick any two. When you add the third, you are gong to get busted.

I respectfully disagree. I smoke regularly in my basement without my mom's knowledge and always use cigarettes to cover up the smell. She hasn't said a thing.

Also have been pulled over after smoking green, but we smoked cigarettes afterwards and the cop didn't say a thing.

Probably just depends on your smeller

First of all a basement is a much larger area than a car. If you smoke in a car with a few friends, I can say that probably 90% of the time cigarettes alone will not cover up the smell, you just can't smell the weed anymore because you were smoking it. Sounds to me you have just gotten lucky. Not only that but someone else mentioned cologne, and I can tell you from personal experience that a strong smell of cologne is/can be an immediate red flag, especially if it is late at night. I have had a quick search done on me at a license check just because I smelled like cologne (which incidentally I had just smoked and left from a friends house, but luckily I didn't have a thing on me.) Besides all of that the most important thing to remember is cops don't actually have to smell marijuana, they just have to say they do. If you have red eyes, and a strong smell of cologne, all a cop has to do is say he smelled marijuana and that right there is probable cause. It may not be the most ethical thing but it does happen.

That your mom pretends not to know what you are doing, and a cop ignored the odor, is not the basis to form a definitive conclusion. You may wishfully think that ciggs "cover" the smell but I can assure you that it is not the case.

I am not a zit-faced stoner who gets high before high school. I have over a half century of life experience, a graduate education in chemistry and human physiology. I am not just pulling this out of my ass.

Look up the phrase "olfactory fatigue". It will explain why you think you don't smell like weed after you smoke, when in fact you do.

But let me address this in a larger context - you are committing one of the principle folly's of youth, looking at the facts through a keyhole. You want to limit the cop to only seeing your red eyes, however there will be a number of other indicators. Like nystagmus - an involuntary eye movement that is accepted as a field sobriety test for MJ. It is not caused by smoking ciggs, but will be sufficient cause to further test you for being under the influence. An LEO is looking at the totality of the situation, and not narrowly focused on a single aspect. An LEO may also be certified as a Drug Recognition Expert who can testify in Court that you were exhibiting signs of being under the influence.

But hey, if you want to stick you head in the sand and pretend that ciggs cover up the smell of hotboxing your basement or car - go for it. What could possibly go wrong?

I know what olfactory fatigue is and I understand how it works. But everytime we smoke cigs after smoking it doesn't smell like MJ anymore, not just to us either, to new people that get in the car. We ask them and they say they can't smell anything.

I have over 17 years of experience and only a GED to my name. But I keep myself educated on these matters, I know a few things that work and a few things that don't. I'm not an infinite stream of knowledge, but I have a brain too And the one thing I try not to do is look through a key hole, I leave sheepish mindsets for the people that do not mind having them.

Look, I'm just trying to save your butt from trouble - you have shown me respect and I appreciate it - but seriously, MJ has a very distinct smell that is immediately recognizable. You are playing this too fast and loose. Go read Mushroom Mans story.

You are depending on a very narrow set of circumstances (smoke MJ, smoke ciggs, then get pulled over when the ciggs have "neutralized" the smell). I'm here to tell you that it ain't gonna happen that way. In California, if you are 17, you already are breaking the law by smoking ciggs which is a basis for the cop to hassle you anyway. I tried to bring your attention to the "teenage trifecta" earlier because we have hundreds of stories of young men getting busted under exactly this circumstance on this forum - and our few LEO's that post here have backed that up saying it is like shooting fish in a barrel - for you it is only a matter of time.

But what about the bigger issue - if you have a job that requires a uniform, dropped out of High School and got a GED, drive fast and take chances, you are not exactly on the fast track to big money. Whose mindset is simpleton?

i dont think they can do anthing if you only have red eyes. however if your driving all over the road then thats another story.... I always get so high before school and my one eye (RIght eye) always basicly closes, and the cops at my school always look at me funny, and im like FUCK YOU! because they cant do shit. so what i "look" high as fuck and it looks like i havnt gotten any sleep in a week, what can they do? im just going to my classes not doing anything wrong.
