Quick question:

Say I'm driving, and I get pulled over because one of my tail lights is out, or something of the like. If the officer has no reason to suspect I have something on me, but because I'm a teenager (18), he asks, "Do you have any illegal substances in your possession?" and I have a pipe in the glove box, or a small bag of ganja in my undies, what should I say?

It seems like it would be stupid to confess if he had no reason to believe I had any.

Side-question: If I tell an officer I have nothing, and he somehow finds out that I do, can I get in even worse trouble for lying? Is honesty really the best policy? I'm thinking a "deny it until they find it" approach is probably best.

I live in Florida, (I've read the NORML state law list, but I like anecdotal opinions.) Thanks.

The Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution reads:
Quote:
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
You are under no legal obligation to incriminate yourself.

Why do the American police constantly stop people for stupid reasons and want to search you ? In South Africa cops never stop you if you have a tail light broken or something stupid like that. Even if they do stop you they NEVER search you. (ofcourse unless they see something illegal or smell a lot of pot smoke coming out the car lol).

Well dude, read my post on a separate thread.

Cops OFTEN misuse there power.

As another poster said, the 5th ammendmant allows you to aviod screwing yourself. The best is to deny everything, dont let them search you regardless of what they say. Don't trust them
